I have told this story before, but I’m going to repeat it. We had just flew into California and landed at LAX. As I was walking past the passengers waiting for their plane, a young girl stepped in front of me and asked if that was real gold as she pointed to my name plate on my coat. I told her it was plated with gold, but had nickel underneath. Back then, United had a policy that all pilots had to wear their coat and cap when walking through the terminal.
She asked me if I recognized her and I told her I didn’t. She said she was Estelle Bennett of the singing group, “The Ronettes.” She asked if she could buy me a cup of coffee and being that I had two hours to my next flight, I accepted her offer. There was a donut shop close to where we were standing named “The Donut Hole.”
She told me she was flying to a place (that I forget) because the group was starting on a tour. (I forget how many cities.) I asked her where her cousins were and she told me they were in New York doing a talk show and that she doesn’t like doing those, so she stayed home. We had some interesting conversations. It was a fun afternoon. BTW, she told me that she really enjoyed being around Phil (Spector). I guess he wasn’t a whacko back then.
