Hobbies

Beside reading, I love to crochet.
My mother and my wife both started out as "call girls" and ended up as "hookers"! Both worked as telephone operators (call girls) and both loved/loves to crochet. Wife's arthritis in her hands has slowed her crocheting down. Still she will pick up the hook and thread and turn out something beautiful without even following a pattern.

My Mother's hands were always busy. If she was sitting, she would be crocheting or knitting. The house was full of doilies and afghans. She made beautiful quilts. I still have several crochet pot holders she made. They are way too pretty to use. She also collected salt shakers, and I have one pair, the plastic Campbell's Kids.

I love tinkering with things. I have a garage full of woodworking tools and equipment, three telescopes, two microscopes, three short wave receivers, and a collection of airbrushes. I occasionally build small scale model kits. I've also done a little watch repair. I seldom throw anything away without taking it apart.

I enjoy making jewelry that's one of a kind. I go to yard sales and estate sales and church fairs, buy pieces and rework them until they become unique pieces.

Well my craft class keeps getting bigger and bigger, it's next number of people who signed up has already doubled. I made the mistake of telling the office to have everyone list colors for the items I was going to pre-dye and boy has that become quite a feat dying and drying. It would have been too much to try to do it during the class, so silly me thought I'd do it at home, I've been doing this the last four days and now I have to sort them all by names of participants. I won't be volunteering to pre-color again. Nothing they can't paint during the session themselves from here on. :eek:ld: I'm exhausted, but looking forward to the next craft class.

What kind of crafting class are you teaching? fabric painting? If so, that is so cool. A friend of mine makes hand painted totes and scarves. I love to get a gift from her. When I first started teaching classes, I would let the people choose their own design. What a time I had trying to figure out how to make each design work. There are always people in the class that seem to need a lot more help than others and monopolize your time. Now I come in with one design for the group to work on and it cuts down on prep time. The needy people, I help but tell them I need to help the whole group and after helping I move on. Some people just want you to do all the work.

hobbies = metal working, jewelry making, hypertufa, embossing paper/metal, card making, baking breads, collecting cars
interests = reading, hiking, gardening, car shows

lon, gadfly is one word.

I'm winging it, I just pick a project that I may have worked on at one time or another, that I feel won't be too complicated for this group who really wouldn't have the patience for anything too intricate of requires more than 90 minutes total. Mostly for now I'm working with recyclable matter, like plastic bottles, toilet tissue rolls, newspaper turning them into various decorative items. Not always throw away items like the upcoming project we're using coffee filters to make a table center piece type wreath. Previous project had an Easter theme using 2 liter plastic bottles. I encourage them to improvise and be creative once they get the base idea going.

And yes, some people do need more help than others, still last class was fun, tiresome but still it was fun as no one complained and one or two people even helped out some. I have a feeling the next class won't go as smoothly, but, I'm still hopeful. Oh and I do have one participant who is blind, which makes for quite a bit of extra work, but, her aide came for part of the first half of the class to help her. We place her hands on the bushes, help her find the color she wants and let her paint away. :)

Just will be using newspaper toilet paper rolls after that if I'm still in town, I'll be doing a jewelry class using plastic bottles.

I'm not a professional, I learn these crafts, putting my own spin on them and then I teach to anyone who wishes to learn. I wish I had taken pictures of the two wreaths I gave away as Easter gifts to a couple of friends, I might be able to get a picture of one the yellow one, but the pink one was the one that I really liked the most, I'll see if I can get that person to snap a picture and send it to me.

AprilT, It's nice you take the time to show these people. I hope they appreciate what you're doing.
Ok, I'll bite, what are "newspaper toilet paper rolls"?
Ohhh, post pics if you can of the wreaths. One of the projects for school a couple of semesters ago was to make jewelry from recyclables. I had such a great time that I still make jewelry from plastics and teach my nieces.

Sorry, I just left out a common, sometimes I type faster than I think and my hand and brain doesn't realize I missed a key. And to think, I used to have to proof read for company presidents and other executives before they sent out important documents. As the brain continues to decline, so does the world turn. :(:D Anyway, it should have read that I use make use of newspaper, toilet paper rolls and other throwaway items too.

I think I may have something on my pc that I've made in the past, I'll try to locate it.

I love that some of you are sharing your knowledge and socializing - what fun! I like to do all kinds of needlework, weaving, spinning, knitting, etc - all kinds of fiber arts.

I also like to research - genealogy is like an ongoing mystery challenge and currently I am looking into the ancient copper mines in Michigan. I follow the History Channel Vikings series and have a whole bookcase of books & articles on the subject. So much of ancient American history has been shoved aside. Am interested in new finds and theories.

Reading is an every day fix and I still like to cook. Currently I am attempting to de-clutter and downsize as we get ready to move into full retirement. I am having to be more selective about project plans - not a bad thing....
