home remedies for flu anyone?

I can't take the flu vaccine because of allergies. My husband always takes the double strength but
now find out it is only abut 10% effective this year. Does anyone have any remedies that help you recover
from the flu? I can't take anti virals or antibiotics so i guess I'm doomed. I try to stay out of crowds but thats not always possible. Thanks for any suggestions.

I would focus on prevention.

Staying out of crowds is a good step. Try not to touch things that have been handled by others if you can avoid it, keep your hands away from your face, wash your hands or use hand sanitizer, etc...

Good luck!

I avoid groups of people whenever possible. I always wear gloves when I'm out in public during flu season (mostly because it's a good reminder to be careful), and I don't touch my eyes, ears, nose or mouth without making sure I've washed my hands first. I wash my hands more frequently than usual. I don't hesitate to back away from and give a wide berth to someone who is sniffling, sneezing or coughing. Better to be rude than sick.

I double up on my neti pot; use it twice a day instead of once.

I stock up beforehand on things that will make me more comfortable if I get sick, like cough drops and saline solution for a sore throat, coconut oil in an eyedropper for ears. I make sure my heating pad is working because I'll be wanting it.

The last time I had the flu was when I was taking the shot, haven't had it in years since I stopped. I try to keep my immune system strong using supplements like vitamin D3, vitamin C (ascorbic acid), anti-oxidants, etc. Also, wash my hands as soon as I get home whenever I go out shopping, etc. Also use the wipes on the shopping cart handle.

Do you already have the flu? I think like others have suggested, plenty of water/fluids, rinsing your throat the sea salt and warm water, raw honey, coconut oil is a natural anti-viral you can take internally or melt in your mouth and gargle with it. If I remember, I think once you get the flu you just have to rest and let it run its course. If you're already sick, I hope you feel better soon.

Thanks everyone! I don't have the flu yet but am trying to prepare. I haven't had the flu since I was a young person & I thought it was bad then. I think the reason I dread it so much is that I am allergic to most medications & supplements that could help. Good luck to you all!

I've had a couple of really bad bouts with flu. A friend was a doctor who treated me the first time. When I said I thought there wasn't any remedy for flu, he said when people get too sick most doctors will treat their symptoms so they can recover.

The second time was swine flu, one of the years the epidemiologists guessed wrong. That's the last time I got a flu shot. No thanks. I went to an urgent care center after it developed into bronchitis and the doctor treated the bronchial infection.

I take high daily doses of several vitamins every day and forego flu vaccines. I also use a Nelimed sinus rinse, especially if I start to feel like my sinus may be building up... thinking that these virus tend to start out in your nasal passages and work down to your mouth, throat, and lungs from there. These seems to take care of that slow drain down your throat were you are constantly clearing your throat and I don't know of anything else that does.

If you get it- Sleep and water, lots of water; lots of sleep.
Aspirin for fever and/or pain. ...
Agree with this. I got the flu in 2015. Just as an experiment I decided to try and ride it out with no meds at all, not even for fever, cause I read a fever can be a good thing. Something about the virus not liking the heat. (There must be some reason for a fever, right?) One Aleve, one night when I couldn't sleep, figured sleep was more important. It was miserable for a day or two, but was over rather quickly, maybe a week. Don't know if it was a coincidence, or just the strain of flu was milder, or it worked.

I'm hoping you will not get flu this year. Fever is a good thing unless it gets high enough to cause brain damage. I usually get a seizure if my temp gets high.

There's really not much more you can do once you get it.
I agree absolutely that fever is the body's way to "burn off" the invaders, it's just that sometimes it gets out of control.
Sleep helps the body to repair itself.
Water flushes the system and re-hydrates after fever.

After thinking about this thread, I got interested in face masks for certain situations during flu season. Anyone have any words of wisdom about them?

I wear a face mask if the flu is building up in my area and also gloves, along with a disposable bio-hazard suit and booties. In very bad flu years, I use a giant hamster globe when I need to go out. I get some strange looks, but I stay flu-free. Oh yeah, I also get flu shots each and every year. I did have the Swine Flu the year Mexico was kind enough to send it north of the border. Tamiflu got rid of it, just about overnight.

So how do you prevent it.

How do the virus get into our system.

The obvious place, through the nose. Nice cozy place for a virus to multiply.

I would like to make a guess, that people with runny noses have less colds and flu because they get flushed.

From the hands of course. We are always touching our face and nose.

That's only my theory, don't take it to the bank.

Not a bad theory. I remember years ago when workers in medical clinics began realizing during flu outbreaks they were treating very few people whose cultural foods included hot peppers. Hot peppers thin the mucus and cleans nasal passages. Living in New Mexico, I can walk a block and eat at several places that serve hot peppers, and I usually step up my consumption during flu season.

Given a choice between eating carne adovada and taking a likely ineffective flu shot, I'll pick the carne adovada every time. I also love massaman curries and eat them frequently in the winter.

I only smile when I think something is funny. You might consider the possibility that you aren't as funny as you think you are.

I would be willing to bet I smile more frequently than you climb trees.

What an unpleasant person you are! I would hope you smile more than five to ten times a week, which is how often I'm up in the trees! With the "vibes" you put off, within this forum, I actually wonder!
