A lot of work went into turning-out a pair of pants or an outfit from a pattern, not to mention the cost of the fabric.Simplicity was what my mom used. I remember all those evenings standing there having her pin a hem. What a drag! She made me a dress for a choir concert and one of the boys behind me stuck his gum in the zipper. She was so mad cuz she had to end up cutting me out of it. LOL
Yes, "tent dresses" is exactly what they were called.Even though my mother was an excellent seamstress, she did not sew that much for us. I remember when I was in the 6th grade and she made me a baby blue (wool) jumper to wear for a Christmas pageant. I loved that jumper. And another time, she made me a 'tent dress' , I think that is what it was called. She made our costumes and our dresses for special occasions.
I remember the style with the dainty, poufy shoulders. The dress in the middle is the one mom made me except in a plain color.

1967 or 1968 ?@pamelasmithwick do you recall the years of the tent dress?
My mom sat at her machine until we were all out of school, and then some, but throughout those earlier days/years, mom spent untold hours at her machine sewing, mending, fixing, doing alterations, you name it.After I finished 6th grade she stopped sewing.
Marci, the thread by Guterrman today is made in two different countries. If you look at the tag the original thread from Germany is still quality and the stuff from Mexico is coarse and thick and will not work in my machine.I can't sew for crap and the quality of thread has gone so far downhill it's ridiculous.
