How Active Physically Active Are You? Are You Active On A Regular Basis?

I retired at age 58, but all through my 50's 60's & 70's I was very active on a regular basis with Racquet Ball, scuba diving, golf, water volleyball, Pickle Ball, bike riding, running. As soon as I hit 80 my legs started acting up due to newly diagnosed Rheumatoid Arthritis. This disease curtailed my golf and most other sporting activities except swimming. The good news is that I have a good heart because of past aerobic activities so the doctor says. I always enjoyed playing sports and was glad I was able to do so for a long time.

I walk at least a couple of miles everyday. I used to jog, go to the gym and participate in exercise classes but I haven't done that in awhile now. I still ride my bike now and then, but walking is my main form of exercise these days. I do my own housework and yardwork, so I count that as activity too.

I've had a FitBit for several years. Since I wear it every day it gives me a visual of my activity. On a good day I walk six or seven miles average. Then if I'm really ambitious I let the dogs walk me too, given their size and how hard they can pull...that's strength training just trying to stay on your feet.

Thanks to my Fitbit, 10,000 steps a day minimum. Lots of gardening in the summer. I've slowed down a lot as I've aged, but still pushing on til I start pushing daisies.

Nearly every day that the weather permits, I am outdoors doing something on our 40 acres....Mowing, gardening, logging, etc. This manual labor is the best health care plan I've found. I was pushing 200lbs, with a 40 inch waist when we moved here 14 years ago....now I stay between 155 and 160, and 34 inch pants are kind of loose. Outside of an annual physical, dental visits, and yearly eye exam, I rarely have any need to see a doctor....hopefully, for years to come.

I go to a gym just down the road from me about four days a week and do what I like to call, The Treadmill of Doom. I walk 2 miles on it while moving the incline up and down. Then I'll go stretch for a while, that's it. I used to do some of the weight machines but I guess I got lazy about doing them. Then I have the house, lawns, all the usual stuff around here.

Exercise?

At 73 I have COPD so any exercise is on again, off again. I also have severe osteoporosis and have been advised to be "careful". Lifting is a major problem so that leaves out a lot of chores, especially outdoor ones which I prefer. I walk all around the house these days by a timer 15 min. at a time. Sometimes I turn on Pandora and just cut loose and dance as long as I can before resting. It's a pitiful excuse for exercise I know. :/:(

My exercise wonderment involves my grocery stores, which aren't what most people would consider walkable shopping. I was in the mood for some walking today, so instead of taking a bus most of the way home after grocery shopping, I decided to walk all the way home. That might be good for my general health, but I wonder if it worsened my plantar fasciitis. The weight of the groceries was not a factor, since I had a small cart for that.

I am 71 now. I get up about 8AM. From the time my feet hit the floor in the morning I am active all day long. I can always find things to do around the house. I don't watch TV at all during the day. In the spring and summer I garden. During the day,I take a peek at the computer once in awhile. I have knees that ache but try not to give in to it. If they get particularly bad I put the heating pad on in the evening. So far, that and a good Epson salt soak, does the trick. Right now I am painting all my kitchen cabinets,I've been up and down the ladder all day long.

I exercise almost every day, I walk. In the winter, I use my treadmill Also have a stretching routine that takes around 45min in the evening. I have to exercise to manage chronic pain so that is my incentive!

I'm back from my first visit to the gym. Do you know that you have to actually USE those machines to lose weight and get in shape? What a gyp! I thought I'd look like the people in the advertisements after one visit....hmmmmph.

No, seriously, they set me up with a routine to follow, which I did to the best of my ability. Then, I had to come home and take a nap. Now everything hurts but I feel very ..... well.....um.....exercised.
