How come some stores in the same chain ask a lot of questions and others don't?

At the Job Lots store I shop at most frequently, I always check out without the clerk asking any questions. However when I shopped at another one, when I went to check out, the clerk asked me for my phone number and email address. A similar circumstance happened last year at Panera Bread restaurant - the one closest doesn't ask questions; another one wanted to know a lot of personal info even before I was seated. I asked what they needed that info for and the girl said "For our customer database". I walked out of that place.

There's no reason on earth why you have to say out loud your phone number in a crowded store, where any pervert/convict/whacko can hear it. Tell them "No!". And I'd as far as data bases are concerned, ask them to answer those questions before you do.

A simple "no" is all that's needed. Then you don't have to carry around negative feelings for years.

I don't give any personal information unless I have to. Like if I forget to take my supermarket card, then I know I have to give my phone number to them. Nobody gets my email address, that's just crazy and very invasive. I agree with Nvtribefan, a simple no will do, I wouldn't let them bully me into it either.

Do you go to all the effort of making up lies when a simple "no" is all that is required?
We both get a perverse pleasure in the knowledge that we will have polluted the database that they claim to be creating. Many of our friends and associates now do the same for the same reason.

Just to speak from the clerks point of view. Why some ask and some don't. There is pressure to sign people up for various things some clerks may not care, others may feel they will lose their job or not get a raise if they don't meet their goals that's why some ask and some don't. If you don't want to give out information just say no with a smile. It just make the world a little brighter all around.
