While I do research candidates from all sides (if for no other reason than to know thy enemy), I have to admit that too many times, I vote for the lesser of two/three evils. That's sad, but true. It's not so much that I am voting for candidate "A," but that I'm voting against candidate "B."

Will never happen but I think all candidates for public office in the U.S. should have to take and pass the same tests that immigrants must take to become citizens.

Me, too.

Never vote for someone running unopposed.
Never vote for single issue campaigners.
Seldom vote for incumbents - encourage turnover.
Don't like people who talk about all the stuff that "they" will do. A single politician can't "do" anything.
Prefer folks that talk more about their philosophy and the kinds of things they will support and not support. Makes it easier to choose someone that, at least, claims to think close to the way I do.

General philosophy - all politicians, over time, become corrupt - even if it is "legal" corruption. Would like to see term limits. Would like to see "former" politicians barred totally from the lobbying industry. Do your job and then go home.

I put down "other" as my reason for voting one way or the other when I do, as I think its a gut instinct issue.

Btw you're not "THE" Dr. Jekyll are you, (as I think I know the "other half" in the personality of a mate of mine(?)! :)

An update on the Australian election. Last night the preliminary count indicated that the conservatives would not be able to form a new government and the PM conceded defeat. It is not yet clear whether the new government will have a majority of seats in the House or whether it will have to do deals with the independents or the Greens to pass legislation. The Senate will be very interesting when the count is finalised.

Everything went smoothly and the transition will begin to take place immediately. The AUKUS meeting that will take place in a few days will have new faces at the table. The new PM is the son of a single mother who survived on an invalid pension and he grew up in social housing. His name is Anthony Albanese and he never knew his Italian father. His deputy PM will be a woman of Asian descent who came to Australia as a 3yo from Singapore. She is a lesbian Christian who is married and she and her partner are raising a child together. Her name is Penny Wong and she will be the new Foreign Minister.

The political landscape in Australia is a lot different to both the US and the UK.

Edit - Penny Wong will not be the Deputy PM because she is a senator and cannot therefore serve as acting PM. She will be the Leader of the Government in the Senate and the Deputy PM will be a man - Richard Marles.

My niece was a candidate for the Greens in a Queensland electorate and although she never really had a chance she campaigned strongly and raised awareness of important issues. I am proud of her effort. Here she is campaigning. She is a very unique individual with a passion for the environment, social justice and animals.

The past presidential election was the first time that I ever voted. The only reason I voted was to help get the previous president out of office. I voted for other people on the ballot, but I was so angry about how things were going that I voted for the donkeys. Things that were on the ballot that did not affect me in any way I did not vote on them,
