How do you keep your brain fit?

Studies have shown that as we age, our brain cells, called neurons, tend to lose the tree-branch-like connections between them. These connections, or synapses, are essential to thought. Quite literally, over time, our brains lose their heft. it's why we tend to experience memory loss, distractibility, and other cognitive deficits....those "senior moments" as I like to call them! Brain function does tend to falter with age, leading people generally my age to experience a degree o forgetfulness, confusion and the inability to concentrate. But I also have read and studied a lot about strategies to "exercise" the brain and help keep those connections supple and high- functioning.

So what do you do to exercise your brain?

I like to play an hour, or so, of free online Poker on the Internet every day. Matching wits with a half dozen other people makes me think. I get plenty of phsical activity to keep the old body going, but exercising the brain is equally important.

Reading, puzzles(newspapers & online) card games (online).
I still get a daily newspaper, which I read most of; games like
Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune on the TV, watching documentaries
on TV.
I think genetics play a big part in how we age and if we don't use
it we lose it!

I play a lot of the word games on Pogo.com. I also play the Facebook based Hidden Object game called Criminal Case. You have to solve pizzles, find objects and play detective in each case to solve the crime and arrest the bad guy. I am addicted.

Kudos to our local newspaper which has several word puzzles daily: word jumble, crypt o quip, crossword etc. Even Sudoku which I try once in a while. I read but instead of reading a lot of fiction I tend to read history, biographies etc. I take non credit classes. I also like writing. Most of all, being outside around nature really seems to "recharge" my old tired brain. I see something new everytime. Maybe a different weed or flower or tree then I go home and try to look it up on the internet.

Feed it properly and exercise it vigorously and often.
