I've heard it pronounced both ways but wondered if there was a correct way. Generally if the word should come up in conversation and I need or want to respond with the word in a sentence I cop out and pronounce it the way the person said it.

ka-RIB-bee-in just flows off the tongue better unless you're talking about Pirates of the kar-ah-BEE-in
I got this information from someone I know who grew up in the Caribbean.
Right or wrong, I guess it's up to the speaker.

The American pronunciation was one I have have never heard...his emphasis on the eeee was longer than what I have heard or said. I use both because I never know which was 'better'

In grammar school, way back just after the earth cooled, we were taught to say kar-ah-BEE-in.
