How Long Should It Take To Demolish A Parking Garage?!

We had to endure banging, jack hammering and Lord only knows what else for five weeks. They started at 7:00 a.m....good thing I'm up before then. I feel like we were getting the sounds in stereo since the sound traveled to the back and front of our building. The parking structure which spans 1/2 block across the street from our complex and about 1/4 block on the street that crosses it, still has one side standing. My son said he stood there and watched one day and they had a devil of a time just trying to break up one small section of the concrete. Obviously that structure was built very well. I'm sure this is week six and the workers seem to be more in clean up mode but gee whiz, the rest of that structure is going to have to come down. Now I'm hearing a loud screeching/squealing noise. Should it take this long to demolish that type of structure?

I'm assuming they chose to demolish it safely because it's in a residential area. That does take a lot longer than just blowing it up. There's a ton of very detailed rules and regulations they have to follow to do a safe demolition.

some professional earplugs might help.

I actually just use tissues stuffed in my ears...works great to block loud noise.

if you want to go farther, you can buy sound reduction ear muffs. They use those on airport tarmacs. Block all sound. Start at about $150.

You can even soundproof a room. Not all that hard and not all that cheap.

As far as it taking a long time? Yes, I think it would take a long time. If it were standing alone, with nothing around it, they could take it down relatively quick and easy. But with things around it, they have to be careful about creating disruptive vibrations that will damage the foundations of the structures around it...and other things like that...gas pipes, electrical wires, water pipes..etc. etc. etc.

5 a.m. is mighty early. It’s surprising that the city allows them to start so early.

After it’s down, will be they building something else?

Yes Jon...my son said the same as you and @Murrmurr . As for blocking out the noise, I just play my music either with or without earbuds. Even turning up the T.V. a little more helped. I also kept my patio door closed to help block out the sound. By the beginning last week, I realized I wasn't even noticing the noise too much. Interesting suggestions Jon but I wouldn't go to any expense at this point...they're almost done.

They start at 7:00 a.m. not 5 Jules. Yes they are planning to build a luxury apartment building which I read about over a year ago. I'm told they will break ground next year.

I originally posted this on April 14th at 5 weeks. They are still at the site. At least I'm not hearing jackhammering anymore but I do hear occasional construction noise. It's taking them forever, it seems to clear the debris left by the demolition. Word is a luxury apartment building will go up on that site in 2023. I feel like by the time they get done, we'll be stuck with more construction noise, probably for a good part of the year!

Don't hate the messenger, but after demolition usually comes CONSTRUCTION. Sorry, but what they took away, they are going to noisily put back-and even bigger, which takes longer. Ain't life grand! :)

You're right, as noted in my post #9. There are sites in this town where nothing was built after something was demolished but this ain't one of them. :cautious:

OMG...those people even work on weekends!!! It's 7:24 a.m. and I hear them and their machines because I have the patio door open to take advantage of the nice breeze. I meant to mention too that Joe, one of our board members saw a worker from the construction site take one of our dumpsters, which sat empty across the street from their site after the garbage men picked up. Three of them were out there until our maintenance man could bring them back inside the gate. Joe approached the man and got the dumpster back. What nerve that worker had!
