How long will your food last ?

hollydolly great post about food storage.

To add to your timely post this chart may help if longer storage works for when buying food items on really good sales.

Frozen food that is vacuum sealed lasts an average of 2-3 years, while it will last 6-12 months, on average, stored in other ways. Most vacuum sealed foods will last in the refrigerator for 1-2 weeks, which is much longer than the typical 1-3 days food will last when stored conventionally in a refrigerator

You really don't want to know how old some of my refrigerated food has been when I ate it (during the poverty years) - If the 3 day guidance was true, I'd have been dead long ago (or at least doubled up in pain on the can, haha!)

Here's a handy website where you can type in any foodstuff and it will tell you how long it will safely stay edible... and also all sorts of food related questions, like how long you can keeo food in freezers and fridges

Really great site, Holly. I just checked a couple of old items in my fridge and it is not alarmist at all. I respect that!

Handy site. Thanks.

I just searched for liquid smoke flavour. It said 2 - 3 years but the quality may deteriorate after that. The other day I poured one from 2016 down the drain. It did taste fine. No use risking it. The replacement was $7.

We used to shop once a week or so for our food for the week, but have been shopping every other day, and eating what we buy, because we don't find food lasts as long as it used to, plus some foods we ate are getting harder to find... But that is their plan, but that's a completely different conversation.

Thank you @hollydolly , I'm going to check that sight you posted in more depth..

I think I need to go through things- especially freezer- and toss out some stuff :(

I honestly don't know how my parents did it- they kept food in refrigerator's freezer quite awhile, but upright freezer they had and canned/boxed foods were there for years.
