How Might You Organize a Doggie Play Group?

I was thinking maybe the township website? We have a nature reserve and dog park nearby. Hey there's a place for a sign... they have a bulletin board up there. I'd like to find a group to get together maybe weekly. I've taken Callie up there before. He really enjoys other dogs. It's just that you never know who will be at the dog park.

His best friend is a puggle a quarter his size, so he knows how to be gentle. It's just safer if it was a group of dogs I know and he knows. Preferably mellow breeds or other bullies who understand the play style. Dogs like labs play pretty gently. The bull breeds are like football players. I don't know... How to find like minded local dog owners?

Stop by a couple veterinarian offices, mention the get-together to the staff, ask if you can put a notice on their bulletin board. Maybe do the same at pet groomers and pet supply and feed stores.

Great ideas from tnthomas. This is a very dog friendly area. There are also several dog parks--some where the dogs can run free, others where they must be leashed. A local trainer/kennel operator organizes dog walks a couple times a week.

How about starting with walks then progress to playdates when you know the ones who get along (dogs and owners :sentimental. Could you ask the owner of the pug to get together?

Just came to this thread from Warrigal's "Hamlet" thread and your title appeared on my screen as "How Might You Organize a Doggie Play?" and I saw a bunch of dogs acting out Hamlet (digging up graves, etc.).

I think I would just have a fenced yard and take off their leashes and let them organize themselves. I might do separate sessions for different groups based on size, and/or maybe sex, but other than that I would just let them get on with it. Like horses in a pasture.

The puggle's owner is my best buddy. But due to distance and work schedules we don't get together too often. The vet offices are a good idea. Even the groomer salons. Bullies usually have wash and go fur, but everyone needs a nail trim now and again.
