How Often Do You Visit the Dentist?

I've been going just once a year for a cleaning, and if I need anything done like a filling I take care of it. I don't have dental insurance with my health plan, so I just pay out of pocket. I've always hated to go to the dentist, when I was a kid I was always getting fillings even though I wasn't allowed to eat much sweets and never drank sodas, except once in a blue moon.

Now that I'm in my 60s, I'm having some gum issues, receding, a little bone loss, etc. I brush twice a day, floss and use a proxa brush once a day or when specifically needed due to eating a muffin with seeds or something, and I use Listerine once a day.

When I got home today from the dentist, I decided to work harder on taking care of my teeth, I don't want to lose them and I never want to have dentures, even a partial if I can help it. After I ate my dinner today, I found myself in the bathroom brushing my teeth, lol. I've also decided that at $150 for a cleaning and check-up, I'm going to start going twice a year, as much as I hate to.

How often do you see the dentist? Twice a year? I heard (from the hygienist) that some people go there 3Xs a year.

Three times a year and hopefully it will stay that way. One exam appointment, with xrays and two cleaning appointments per year.

I got a clean bill of health last week....yay me!....except for one molar that has a myriad of tiny cracks. He said it could last me another week or it could last me another ten years but of course urged me to get it crowned right away. Please God, make it ten years.

I go twice a year....the insurance covers 2 x-rays, two cleanings, and about 80% of any normal dental work. My last trip, in Sept., the x-rays looked good, and the cleaning went well. Hopefully, I can go many more years without dentures.

Thanks Jujube and Don, I needed a little push to go more often. :) My husband just goes once a year, but his teeth and gums are much healthier than mine.

I go twice a year. If I need treatment, it is more often. I am never less than twice a year. Here, we don't need to worry about check ups as they are free. Treatment does cost thoough. I used to floss every day but don't do it so often now. I felt that it may be causing more damage than I initially appreciated - catching on fillings, etc.

Every 6 months. I have all of my original teeth, except two back molars, which were pulled when I was about 16 or 17 to make room for spacing before I had braces put on. I do not miss them when chewing steak or anything else coarse.

I normally go a minimum of three times a year.

Back on 6-20-16 I posted about having to have Osseous / Periodontal /gum surgery done, I've had 1/2 of my mouth done already and really need to get the other 1/2 scheduled.

I'd have had the other 1/2 done sooner but it seems like every time I've turned around this year doctors & dentists have been wanting to cut, poke, probe and freeze stuff on me and to be honest I've been putting it off.......everything has been needed to be done, not life threatening and out patient but a feller just gets tired of being messed with after awhile.

I do have a routine cleaning scheduled for 12-29 but tomorrow morning, 12-21 at 7:15 a.m., mama and I have got to be at doctors office for round # 3 of surgery and skin grafts on my nose for the removal of skin cancer so because I'll still be tender and have a good sized bandage on my nose and ear for a few weeks I'll more than likely call and reschedule the dental cleaning appointment for a later date after I get healed up a bit.

Free checkups Ossian ? If you're talking NHS dentists, they're as rare as hen's teeth here. Where I lived before, they were an unknown species.
We've always had private dental insurance which covers 2 checkups, 2 visits to the hygienist and any necessary X-rays per year - usually minor treatment too. Other things are at a reduced cost.

I really feel for you Ike, you have so much going on and it's all serious and painful. :( Good luck with the grafts tomorrow, I can see very well putting off the dentist until your nose is healed.

I've been going every week for about a month now... will go again next week... Having my final dress rehearsal for new dentures.. Last fitting in wax before the real deal is made.

Quite often. I have close to $20,000 into fixing my teeth. Most are crowns and bridges. Two implants. Several root canals. Anything to avoid dentures.

I agree that dentures are not like having your own teeth... provided your teeth are not causing you misery.. If they are.. dentures are a Godsend.

I haven't spent that much Boaterboi, and from what I've heard implants will send you to the poor house, LOL, super expensive! But, I've grown very fond of my teeth we've been working as a team for a good long time now, and I'd like to maintain the relationship, dentures would be a last resort, don't think anyone in my family had more than a small partial. I don't ever plan to let things go that far. :brush:

I just priced TWO implants... just 2.. to stabilize the bottom plate. The quoted price was $11,500. Price without the 2 implants, $4,000. So it gives you some idea how expensive they are.

For the record... and I feel I must comment.. SB.. sometimes no matter how much someone brushes.. or how good their oral hygiene is.. or how many trips to the dentist or periodontist they make... or how much money they spend... SOME people just have bad teeth.. and bone recession causing loosening.. It has noting to do with them not taking care of their natural teeth.

I have, over the years spent many thousands.. perhaps as much as BB... but never totaled it.. to try to keep my natural teeth.. to no avail.. So.. I wish you the best... but just know that it does not always work.
