I recently went through Illinois to visit my sister in Wisconsin. It appears they took out all the toll booths and now they take a picture of your license plate and charge you for tolls on line. Did I know this?? No. I just thought they eliminated the tolls like they did here in Kentucky or billed us through the mail. I didn't have a clue what was required. About a month later my sister mentioned about paying for tolls through Illinois Ipass. What's that, I ask. She was astounded I didn't know about it. Why would I? I don't live in Illinois.
Long story short, if you don't get on line at Illinois Tollway within 14 days and pay your tolls, you get fined $20 for each unpaid toll. Well, I signed into Ipass and paid my tolls but I didn't see any fine for not paying within 14 days. I got a confirmation that I paid, so I guess I'm okay. I was told there are signs about using Ipass in the toll area, but no information about how to pay.
How am I supposed to know to go to a website to pay? They don't show any website address on the sign, and even if it did, how am I supposed to remember website information driving down the road at 70 mph? *ell, I didn't even see the sign. My husband did. He just said, you have to pay the toll. I said, where? There's no toll booths. He said, I guess they mail them to you. Guess what...they don't.
Evidently, everyone in the US has to read the DOT rules for Illinois before traveling.
