We had a huge dust storm yesterday due to the severe drought in victoria
Mildura is a fruit growing area, growers use the mighty river Murray to water the fruit mainly of mainly table and wine grapes as well as citrus crops
It was awful trying to breathe yesterday with reports of quite a few being admitted to hospital with asthma , as well as reports of 3 people with lung conditions passing away due to them huge dust storm

I've never witnessed one while in SA, but it must be quite frightening. I hope you were indoors while it was taking place, though I imagine the dust still gets inside. I used to suffer from asthma, so I can imagine how bad it could be for some. Sad about those who have passed away due to it.

I hope you are doing okay, Milly.

I survived Pinky thank you ,it was terrifying it turned day into night ..now the big clean up continues, I’ve seen many car dealers yards using bust brooms to sweep the dust / dirt off new and used cars
The grape vines were dropping leaves due to us going into winter now most are bare of leaves due to the horrific winds I believe the winds were just short of calling it a cyclone

Never been exposed to anything like one. Only seen them on TV but it seems as though they only occur in certain parts of the country, under extremely dry conditions - -just strong windstorms in others.

Wow! Fascinating, Milly. Do you get much warning when these are about to occur or do they just spring up unexpectedly? It sounds like a serious inconvenience for most, but terrifying and dangerous for those with health conditions.

Reminds me in a way of our winter blizzards, but warmer and of shorter duration. By definition, a blizzard has sustained winds over 35 mph (56 km/h) and visibilty of less than 1/4 mile (400 m) lasting for more than three hours.

Do these dust storms damage the finish on cars and house siding?

:holymoly:

We used to get them here, too, before the area was so built-up. I remember one in particular when I was a little kid trying to get home from school. I couldn't see where I was going or where I was and it terrified me.

Thanks Tommy no not allot of warning believe me it was chocking even being inside ,some are reporting it was a cyclone
it’s one of those dust storms you never seem to get the dust smell out of homes and cars for months latter it’s like a bull dust
and yes it damages homes that are painted on outsides as well as cars
Mildura is a isolated low rainfall city , some 5-6 hours from one of the biggest cities in Australia (Melbourne)
I can imagine what is would be like without the mighty river Murray that’s used for drinking water and irrigation of the citrus and grape vine industry

When I was a child we lived in Hobbs New Mexico as my dad worked in the oil fields. Dust storms were just a fact of life.My mom was a stay at home wife and mom and we helped her constantly trying to get rid of the dust. Glad we moved back to Louisiana after my daddy got hurt in an oil rig accident.
