I’ve been asked to be a moderator.

In my hometown forum which has grown in leaps and bounds. I don’t know if I could be a fair moderator or not, so I’m not sure what to tell this person. Just two of us will be moderating. Has anyone here been a moderator before?
Years ago, I was a moderator on a specific health support forum. Aside from one person who was something of a pest, there were not too many times I had to step in.

It depends on what is allowed on a particular forum. For instance, I would not enjoy moderating a site that allows political free-for-alls.

No politics. It’s strictly photos and discussions about our hometown.

I've Admin'd a couple forums I've created, and moderated a support forum for a specific health matter. If you like people and try to get along with all types then you will be fine. Enforce forum rules with a moderate touch, PM habitual 'problem children', lock threads that become unruly, but explain why you did that.
I never banned anyone that wasn't a willful repeat offender, of course drive-by spammers and obvious trolls were quickly dispatched.
You will do well, Pappy.

I agree with the others. If you'd enjoy it, I think you'd be great at it!

I have done it, and it was rewarding but also difficult at times.
Have you and the other moderator discussed what guidelines for posts, or limits you might agree upon, in case they come up?
Perhaps not important if you already know it's a limited membership and subject focus,
and a friendly respectful group,
but it's something I would want to discuss, if I were to ever do it again.

You are the cream of the crop Pappy, and I know you can deliver! Go for it!

I would be a terrible moderator, smut would be a definite no no but I'd let them go for it on politics, it would soon sort out who was on the right and left, and that's probably why it's not allowed on this forum. :)

I'd be terrible too!
"Obviously I'm not too enamoured with rules", so that's not a good starting point for a moderator, then when a forum member "of a different persuasion" let's say, keeps spouting whatever it might be, (possibly nonsense!), I doubt I'd be impartial in my treatment of them, nor do I keep a cool head very often! :)
Hence keep me away from the power to censor or control other forum members.

I would be useless as a moderator...i would let everything go!
i have regular run ins with a jobsworth moderator on another seniors site where you get culled for breaking their draconian rules .Think bees.I can’t help winding them up.
All potential moderators should check in here...trust your members to behave like adults and they will.
I still wouldn’t do it though!
