I gave little girl dog a bath tonight. She was okay at first but after I got her bathed it was time for the the pedicure, the nail trim. She hates that, I do not know why. I came away with some pretty good scatches.

She still has not forgiven me for the so called abuse. Does anyone has some tips that can make this less trumatic for her. Should I buy one of those harnesses that you hang them up from them up to make it easier to trim their nails. I am just at a loss to make this easier, less scary for her.

I do not think a grinder would help at all as she is also noise sensitive. As far as I know she does well at the vet but they always take her out of the room to do her nails and anal glands. Maybe she feels more comfortable when someone is holding her close while someone else is doing the deeds.

Does anyone have any advice to do this at home without help?

oh..yes..our last little dog..peaches is such a pill...she'd run and hide if she sees those nail cutters...even if we cut our own nails...
paw always cut their nails..out on porch while sun was shining...
hold them close to him..their back against him..
my turn with peaches now..i keep putting it off coz she has tiny black nails..
your post prompts me to accomplish this task

I know what you mean. I have to sneak around, put a towel, the shampoo and clippers by the sink before the bath. If she sees anything, she is under the bed. It takes me as long to get everything ready as it does the bath.

She doesn't mind the bath once we get started but hates the nail trim. I don't get it, I don't hurt her, just take a little off but she still has a fit. I do not trim them until I can see them hitting the floor like it would not be uncomfortable for her to be running around on.

The other two are good at running around outdoors and don't need a trim as often. They wear theirs down with activities.

It's weird isn't it? I think it has something to do with an animal's fear of being trapped by the leg. It may not be the cutting of the nails as much as the holding of the wrist while it's done.

It's a two person job in this house. One of the men holds the dog while I clip as fast as possible, then a special treat afterward like cheese. Even so, there's still struggling and whining and drama. Oh the horror.

I have to do it alone, dread the battle every time. I actually take a little bowl of treats so I can distract them best I can.

My skin is a lot thinner now and those nails can give a pretty good scratch or cut.

I also saw somewhere...where they had put peanut butter on a stick or bone or something ? as a distraction while cutting their nails. They were licking that peanut butter like crazy. :sneaky:

Dogs that I have had I took along on bicycle rides, and they would wear down their claws on the concrete or asphalt. My wife would take them for walks on concrete sidewalks or she would have them chase a ball on asphalt or concrete roadways. We verry rarely needed to clip their claws. When I clipped claws, I would remove a small amount of the claw at a time making sure not to get too close to the quick which would cause pain for the dog. It would mean clipping the claws every three or four days letting the quick naturally recede back into the base of the claw.
