I Asked Verizon If They Gave Senior Discounts and They Lowered My Internet Bill

My 86 year old neighbor upstairs asked me to check and see if there was a way to get cheaper internet. That got me to thinking, why don't I do the same for myself. When I asked about senior discounts, the representative put me on hold while he checked to see what discounts he could offer me. After two years, the promotional credits ended and my bill jumped from $71 to $81 a month, including taxes and equipment. He upgraded me from 200 Mbps to 500 Mbps and waived the monthly charge for the new router.

My bill is now $73 all inclusive. I'm already enjoying the faster speed, which seems to be helping to eliminate the "spinning beachball of death" I've had to deal with during too many operations after I "upgraded" my Mac OS to Catalina, which is known to be quite problematic. Best part, I asked him when the promotion ends and he said it doesn't unless I change/upgrade my plan. :D

Have you asked for senior discounts or gotten them for your devices and services?

I have a military discount from Verizon and it was worth the effort it took to get it.

I have cable TV with no internet. It is $61 total each month for the lowest tier of service. I asked a long time ago for a discount and they said no. That was about 20 years ago.

I suppose I could work up the nerve to ask again. One annoying thing is that they are charging me $6.00 a month for a tiny DTA (digital to analog) box. When they issued the DTA boxes years ago, they were free, and they said they would never charge for them, lol.

They put me through the 'do you want to cancel?' drama when I asked them before.

I'm just trying to get internet now after 29 years! I'm rural and no company offers it where I'm located so I have to use a mobile wi-fi and it runs about $720 a month!

A good reminder for us all to check into those discounts, @OneEyedDiva ... thank you. Sure wish our heating oil company would do that. Every time I hear that blasted truck coming, I know it's going to be $700 or $800... and he comes much too often. 🤬

I was going to say to threaten to go to another provider. That tactic has worked for me and others I have known, but perhaps you're in an area where there is no other provider and your cable company would know that. :cautious:

@shedevil7953 are you able to get MetroPCS or T-Mobile where you live? I don't know if this would work for you but I have had MetroPCS (part of the T-Mobile company) for years. At first I started out paying $40 a month, all inclusive. I upgraded about 3 years ago to unlimited plan because I planned to travel more. So I got more Gigs for the hotspot which is secure and extremely reliable. I never used the hotspot for my computer but have used it many times for my tablet. Cost per month, with free Amazon Prime thrown in...$60. I can't vouch for if T-Mobile is as reliable though.

@win231 and @CallMeKate You're welcome, of course.
