I barely see them in the dark!

It was right around 7:00 PM when I pulled out of my alley and started driving about to head out of town.
The first boy I saw on his bike had dark clothing on and I thought how lucky I was to have seen him at all.
Then at the next corner more kids on bikes.
Must have been a good evening for biking because there were people everywhere I looked on bikes.
They would have shown up well if they were wearing reflective vests or something but who would want to do that if it is too warm out or too cold where it might not fit over a coat?
But still they need to be seen!
The best idea I have seen is reflecting arm and leg bands.
I could start a drive here in town to get those for all the kids in town if they would be effective.
What do you think?
Does that sound like something that kids would want to go along with?
Maybe if we could make it a fad that kids wear something reflective?

In our little town, last year, a thirteen year-old girl was killed on her bike. My son worked with her mother who was just ruined of course. I asked what time of day and it would have been twilight as I suspected. Neither the kids, nor the drivers realize that the sun has gone down just enough to make them nearly invisible.

3m makes reflective adhesive tape that might be an inexpensive option. 🤔

If it’s not a kid it will be an animal or an obstacle in the road, it might be best to focus on what we can do or to change our driving habits if night driving is becoming more dangerous for us.

It's exactly the same in Germany.
Kids and adults on their bikes in the dark with black clothes.

No reflective tapes or vests.
And, as in the Netherlands, the bikes without any lights.
Lights are mandatory in the darkness, but special clothing? Nada! But even if, it seems that nobody cares.

Bea is right too. I don't like to drive in the darkness anymore. Especially if darkness and rain go together.

You should go to the Netherlands. It's not kids on bikes, but adults. During the day they can be seen with a phone or book in one hand while riding their bikes. In the evening, as you say, you can't see them coming. Very few have lights on their bikes.
..never mind the Netherlands.... what about cambridge.....?...students everywhere on bikes, paying no attention to the road at all

Ebikes are becoming an issue where I live. They can go 20 to 28 MPH depending on the model. Several times I had to jam on the brakes so I didn't hit a person on an Ebike because they are darting across traffic, or weaving off the side of the road without looking.

they're a BIG issue here as well now.. ebikes and E-scooters.... riders don't need to have insurance or a driving licence.., yet these bikes are capable of badly injuring or killing people

I hate to say it but I think the reason people don't take more care to make themselves visible is because it looks dorky and people wanna look cool. Cool rules out over safety. Also sometimes the druggies are on bikes and they don't wanna be seen. One night when I got off work and it was dark out, I was on my way home and where I live there's no street lights.

Here's this colored man in black clothes on a black bike in the pitch black. I almost didn't see him. He's dang lucky he didn't get hit. I don't understand why people are the way they are or why they do the things they do. But they're gonna do what they want no matter what.
