Dear Diva there is a thread for Haiti
https://www.seniorforums.com/threads/7-2-earthquake-hits-haiti.63125/

I think the Last Post was yesterday.
It really is a horrible tragedy.
(some troll made an unkind comment to the op but it was removed)
Thank you so much Rose. I looked for it and didn't see anything! I've noticed that sometimes searching the category itself deceives me! I should have used the search tool. Oh now I see why! It was not under Current News and Hot Topics but Hobbies and Interests>Earth Science...etc.

Just heard a Haitian writer named Edwige Danticat (Sp?) going on on NPR about how Haitians' problems can be traced to colonialism and the US occupation. I'm not so sure.

Haitians chased the French out and have been independent for over 200 years (since 1804). The US occupied Haiti from 1915 to 1934 after seven Haitian presidents were assassinated in the seven years from 1908 to 1915.

The Dominican Republic, which occupies half of the island on which Haiti is located, broke off from Haiti in 1844. It was occupied by Spain from 1861 to 1865 and by the US from 1924 to 1931. It has a per capita GDP of $8242 while Haiti's is $1272.

Haiti suffers from misgovernment, from deforestation, from earthquakes, and from hurricanes. It all adds up to misery and grinding poverty. Aid money goes down a rathole of corruption and waste.

When Haitians come to the US, they seem to do well. Notable of Americans of Haitian descent include PBS' Yamiche Alcindor and the writer and director Suzanne de Passe, the Fugees' Wyclef Jean, and many others.
