I can't find a roofer I am comfortable about hiring

I've had several roofing contractors here to look at my back porch roof. It's about 300 sq ft. The first one told me it was 500 sq ft and wanted $4800+ (included a senior discount) and added a lot of things I didn't want, even after I informed him of it.

The second came and looked and gave me a verbal quote and I said I still wanted to get some more estimates. He call me the next day and said he was on his way to do the roof. I NEVER gave him the "go ahead" on it, so I don't understand this. I told him again I was still in the process of getting quotes. He hung up.

The third I believe I mention in a previous post when I tried to contact him through the email address on his business card, it was answered by another person in a window replacement business.

The fourth was here on Thursday. I had to keep repeating what I said to him and shouting. I think he was hard of hearing. Of course I was wearing a mask and perhaps because he couldn't see my mouth, he couldn't respond to my questions. He also denegrated other roofers and said "They're all crazy." He ripped a shingle off the roof and said he needed it "for a match" and would call me in a few days with his estimate both for just doing a patch where the shingles are loose and for the whole roof. No written quote from him, either.

I am waiting to hear back from two other I've contacted. One did return my call, but said he was working on a job out of town and would be done with it on Monday and would call me then. This is Sunday and I haven't heard back. The other never returned my phone message.

Sometimes being an old lady alone has disadvantages.

hahaa! I choose my contractors differently. If he drives up in a new pick up truck, I'm dubious.
If he drives up in an old beat-up truck with crap in the back, alone, he's in the running. Don't want to pay for someone's new truck!

I called one many years ago to give an estimate on painting the front porch. He sent and advance man to assess the job to determine if it was worthy of his attention. The advance man came in a Lexus in a business suit and briefcase. I guess my job wasn't good enough; at least I never heard back from them.
