I've had doctors shaking their head when I tell them what's been wrong with me for so many years. My hair is falling out , my head is sweating,I'm so fatigued I can't function, stomach aches, joint pain, depression ... seems like no one took me seriously. They all say it's my thyroid , had it tested and it's fine. I finally went to my 4th new doctor , and she sent me for a vitamin D count in my blood. Turns out , my D level is so low , it's almost not there . That's the Answer ! I'd jump up & down if I had the energy ! Now all I have to do is take supplements and I'll be a new person in no time !!!! I'm just in awe of what a little vitamin can do to throw your whole system out of whack. I doubly in awe because it's a cheap treatment . Crossing my fingers XXXXXX !

Good luck, I take a vitamin D3 daily, as the test I had proved to be low even though I was supplementing all along. Now I take 5,000 IUs, Country Life or other quality brand. I was just taking 1,000. It's also good for macular degeneration and many other things.

So happy for you Toomuchstuff! What a relief it is something so easy to fix. I, too, have found that I need supplements to stay feeling good. Too bad doctors know so little about nutrition and rarely think to look into that. They are trained to find things that need prescriptions or surgery.

That's what I take.. My last level was 49.9.... You can have a level up to 80 and be safe.

I think checking for vitamin and mineral deficiency should be routine especially when what is called 'general malaise' or fatigue is an issue. I cannot understand why it is not. Being low in certain things can cause serious damage. Low potassium put me in the hospital once. I was certain I was having a heart attack and probably would have without quick treatment.

I tend to be paranoid about such things. Are they ignored because the fix is so easy, so cheap and are over-the-counter rather than by prescription or is it due to inadequate medical training in nutrition?

I'm glad that you've found solutions to your problems. Hope you're feeling better soon.

Just be sure to get your levels rechecked after a time. You don`t want to get too much D. After my breast cancer, they wanted me to take D as the meds I was on can cause bone loss. I overdosed myself on it and it wasn`t very long (a month or so) before I was feeling really crummy. I mean REALLY crummy. D does not pass out of the body-it stores up-and really does a number on you. Took me a couple of months to feel normal again. Living in California and spending a lot of time outdoors,I don`t really feel that I need a supplement anyway.

I've been taking one of these "men's over 50" multivitamins for years. I usually eat a fairly balanced diet, but a few cents a day for one of these multivitamins is cheap insurance. It must be helping, since when go in for the annual exam, the doctor usually says "keep on doing whatever you are doing".

My level wa 5 !!!!!!! Are all supplements equal ? Does it matter which one I buy ?

I would just recommend that you be sure to buy vitamin D-3, as it's the more natural and best absorbed by your system. You sound like you're definitely deficient, my one test a couple of years ago was 35ng/ML, and the standard according to the doctor was 20-96, natural health experts recommend being on the high side. I wouldn't worry much about overdosing, you'd have to take extremely large amounts to have any issues.

The brand I currently use is Country Life Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol), 5,000 IUs....but they come in lesser dosages. It's from a non-fish liver source and is gluten free. I've been using natural supplements for decades now with good results, no major health problems or on prescription meds. D3 is good for bones, teeth, eyes and the immune system.

You're welcome Toomuchstuff. :) I buy a lot of my supplements locally at the Natural Grocers (Vitamin Cottage) stores, don't know if there's one near you.

I'm glad you found the answer to your problems. The exact thing happened to my sister in law. After taking the supplements she feels so much better. If the supplements hadn't worked she could have tried the injections which you can give yourself at home.

Just a quick update ..... My doc called me today and told me to take ----> 10,000 <----- units of vitamin D3 per day for 3 months ! That ought to get me back in the saddle ! LOL
