I had an interesting drive today....

….through North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Kentucky, and Ohio on my way to the wedding this weekend in Ohio.

I took the mountain route and boy, were there mountains and were they beautiful. I started out at the crack of dawn to have plenty of time to stop where I wanted. I stopped off a while in Pikeville, Kentucky, because I wanted to see the Hatfield & McCoy feud sites. I stopped at the historic Dils Cemetery, which has McCoy graves and a Hatfield grave. I'm always interested in the two families as I have a connection to the Hatfields but wasn't able to make it to the Hatfield grave because it was up a steep path and I had on "Das Boot" (Das Boot and steep paths do not make good bedfellows). I did find a gravestone for a little girl who died in the 1800s, whose parents named her Pocahontas. Apparently parents in the 1800's didn't always show good taste in names, either.

I also stopped in the charming town of Circleville, Ohio, which has fantastic old buildings and houses.

I might go back to North Carolina next week by way of West by God Virginia and pay the Hatfield cemetery a visit.

What a beautiful drive this must be, Jujube! We live on a magnificent planet, don't we?

Unfortunately, our species makes it less magnificent, with each passing day. We are the only "advanced" life form on Earth that routinely over-breeds in any given location, fouling our nest at the expense of ourselves and those species unfortunate enough to share space with us.

Every word you wrote is absolutely true.

Travel to foreign countries is nice but road trips in America can be an amazing experience. Jujube touched on the kind of things people read about but never take the time to experience for themselves like she is doing.

I don't know how many posts I've read by those that don't know what to do to fill their time in retirement. Seeing America up close by road trips and stopping to enjoy what books describe can fill those empty hours.

Before we settled into our summers in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, we spent 4-5 months each year traveling all over the country. We still have N. Dakota, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Alaska, Michigan and Hawaii to drag our RV to. I've been to Hawaii but not camping (a little hard to drive to....LOL) and lived in Michigan and the Spousal Equivalent has spent considerable time in Wisconsin. Alaska is on our bucket list in the next couple of years but probably a cruise there.

Jujube, that'a sounds like a wonderful road trip. All the things I would enjoy seeing. I hope you have a good time at the wedding also. Maybe you can take a different route going home and see even more.
