I have a Mockingbird!

She resides in a tree out back and obviously has a nest there. I say obviously because her breed become very protective of there territory when they have a nest to defend. So, in the hopes she reads Senior Forums I have penned a simple message to "Mockee". "Mockee, each morning I throw out bread for you. You are so concerned about the wrens and Gnatcatchers and you're chasing them out from their tiny theft that you get none none for yourself. Think about it Mockee....

Jim, I have a Mocking Bird, too. I have feeders in my back yard, lots of sparrows and finches of course but also lots of doves and Jays. I have a large back and yard the birds are all over ethe yard, eating, discussing this and that pertaining to bird lore, holding conferences, etc. That attracts hawks, which love dove meat. But this mocking bird will sit high upon the utility pole, and before the hawk appears, the mocking bird sends a signal, "ahoy, hawk in the area." The birds will scramble and fly into the trees and bamboo. I think you've got a friend back there, Jim.

A few years ago when we were camping for the summer in North Carolina, we had an "unmated male" mockie in the tree right outside our bedroom window. He'd start singing at midnight and keep it up for at least two hours every night. I'd go out, shine a light on him, bang on the tree and even a couple of times sprayed water at him, but he'd be back the next night.

I was so desperate for a good night's sleep, I considered signing him up for a avian dating service or hiring a hooker for him. Finally, he apparently found a mate and settled down to quieter pursuits. I didn't miss him. They are delightful birds, but not at 2 a.m.

I'm jealous !!! I'd love some in my yard ! I'm one of the few people I know that love Crows, too. They're smarter than some of the kids I've known !

What we miss from when we lived in Arizona is the hummingbirds. They were all over the place. I have only ever seen one in the eastern states and that was up in the Smokey Mtns of North Carolina.

You know I've put out hummingbird feeders and only occassionally do I see a hummingbird, one lonely hummingbird, and he does not partake, ever. He stands still twelve inches off the feeder and looks, Once I caught him partakinging in the flower garden. The feeder seems to not show him much. It's like, "Is that the best you can do?" I suspect he has better offers elsewhere.

The mockingbird is my favorite. You don't have to see them to enjoy them. They seem to prefer the city more here. I did hear one out in the country this summer. First one ever, that I've noticed.

We have mockingbirds come round each year, and are a joy to watch as well as listen to. During the mating ritual, he will perch on the highest peak of the house and sing his heart out. He will do somersaults in flight displaying his striped wings. And when in flight....looks like a pinwheel! The female is smaller, and as Jim said, they run off intruding birds. They have quite a "play list", as well!

I used to have a mocking bird, but it began harassing my cat laying in the back yard.

...later on, I noticed feathers where the cat was laying. Didn't see or hear the mocking bird anymore.
