I live in a block of units so what goes on in other units can usually be heard by me

The unit above is occupied by a FIFO Worker (Fly in Fly out)
He is home for a week and at work for 3 weeks. He catches a plane in the early hours of the morning so sets his alarm for 3.30am.
Every time he is home he drinks alcohol and sleeps very soundly. So soundly that when the alarm goes off at 3.30 am he never wakes up.
Time now is 3.40 am, the alarm has been going for 10 minutes and has now stopped. It will resume in 5 minutes,
I do not understand why he does not turn the alarm off when he is home. Yes, I have told him that his alarm wakes me each time
it goes off and he always say he will turn it off and never does.
Also, when he drinks heavily, he will put a DVD movie on late at night, with the volume louder than it needs to be, and fall asleep.
Movie finishes, credits roll with accompanying soundtrack, which continues on a loop. He rarely wakes up.

My apartment has very high ceilings (it was an old school) but the only apartment I hear anything from is one above me. I can tell when their dog starts chewing on a bone (or whatever it is). Usually late at night. It doesn't really bother me as I can sleep through anything, but it would bother someone else.

It can be similar where I live but for me the trade off is worth it.

My biggest noise complaint is with the smoke detectors that chirp when the battery needs to be replaced. Sometimes they chirp for hours or days before someone changes them or they finally die.

I sleep with an oscillating fan next to my bed year round. The gentle hum of the fan blocks out
much of the sound from the other apartments and the city streets.

I'm a light sleeper with nearly bionic hearing. Simply cannot live in multi-unit housing or in single dwelling homes close to noisy neighbors even with white noise and earplugs. I can get used to airplanes and trains in the night, but irregular noises, no. Love the sounds now of cattle lowing and coyotes howling in the distance. Crickets outside my window are stalked killed no matter the hour.

I was wondering about living in close quarters. We are going to be moving into a brand new senior community. When we first inquired, the only units were duplexes. We were unsure as to what to expect. As luck would have it, a single family unit came available, we jumped on it.
