I Miss Personal Notes

My Mom would be near a hundred this year. Maybe she was one of the last generations to do lengthily handwritten correspondence. Think about it...a book of the selected letters of Hemingway...printed emails just wouldn't show as much personality.

I know fighting the information age is useless, they will come for us anyway. But I got a thank you for my grand nieces birthday party today. It was a big party and her mother has a busy schedule. But everything...the envelopes, invitations, and thank you cards were all completely computer generated.

It's kind of like getting a thank you for your order from Barnes and Noble...just sort of flat and impersonal. Back in the day I was taught there should be at least a handwritten signature or sentence...not just a mass mailing. Oy that I'm a dinosaur.

The notes (excluding envelopes and invitations) I think should be handwritten IMO. Yes, things are changing today but I still believe in handwritten thank-yous. I could be old-fashioned too, so maybe others will disagree.

I'm fine with digital invitations whether via email or computer printed. Although I feel a handwritten thank you note is lovely to receive, I accept that the pace of life for my son's family and my nieces is faster and more stressful than ours might have been at that age. I'd rather receive a thank you and know that a gift arrived safely and was appreciated sooner than later, so if it's electronic, that's OK by me. My DIL writes handwritten thank yous but they're often a couple months late. I've taken to saying thanks by phone instead of handwritten notes. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I feel the medium is not the message.

I still get a little thrill when I get a handwritten note in the mail and my hope is that others do as well.
