I sure didn't vote for this guy.

He's afraid that Guam is going to tip over because it is overpopulated.

Just when you thought that you’d seen about everything

They not only vote, they are in congress. We are screwed.

THE US Navy is gonna tip over Guam

Doesn't matter what is your party affiliation. This is sadly too funny.
This has to be the absolutely dumbest person to be in congress or he has
No clue that islands do not just float. This is beyond belief, even for
Washington. A kindergarten kid has more intellect, yet he was elected.
OMG!

I looked it up on snopes.com

He says he was just speaking metaphorically & was trying to use humor to make a point....

From snopes:

This exchange was the subject of much ridicule and speculation: Was Rep. Johnson really expressing concern that the addition of 8,000 Marines and their families to Guam would literally cause the island to become "so overly populated that it will tip over and capsize," or was he engaging in a metaphor about concerns over the level of environmental degradation that might result from a sudden 14% increase in Guam's population? The latter viewpoint is bolstered by the fact that immediately after his "tip over and capsize" statement, Johnson did explicitly say he was concerned about "the sensitive areas of the environment, coral reefs and those kinds of things." On the other hand, Johnson's prefacing that statement with the words "And also things like the environment ..." (and his curious fixation on Guam's exact dimensions) could be taken to mean that his previously expressed fear "that the whole island will become so overly populated that it will tip over and capsize" was a different subject and was therefore not a metaphor for environmental issues. Or perhaps Johnson was clumsily trying to express the notion that adding another 25,000 people to Guam would create an unsustainably large population (and thus the island would reach its "tipping point").

Only Johnson knows for sure what he was thinking as he questioned Admiral Willard, and he later claimed he was "speaking metaphorically" and "kidding" (although critics noted no trace of humor was apparent in his words, tone, or body language, nor did he react or offer correction when Admiral Willard addressed his concerns about the island's "tipping over" as if they were meant literally):

4th District Congressman Hank Johnson is now backing away from an outlandish suggestion he made to a United States Navy admiral that the Pacific island of Guam could "tip over and capsize" if too many U.S. Marines are stationed there.

Johnson said "my fear is that the whole island will become so overly populated that it will tip over and capsize."

In an interview, the Decatur Democrat said he was kidding and simply speaking metaphorically to make a point during the committee hearing.

Johnson said, "I can say things that are quite humorous and not smile about it and it leads people to think about what I said."

"Often, I've been known to use humor as I deliver a message. That's just one of the gifts that I think that I have," Johnson deadpanned.

"I've been around long enough in this district for voters to know that if Hank said Guam is in danger of capsizing, they would know precisely that I have a sense of humor.

I tend to believe his explanation because a.) nobody is dumb enough to believe an island can tip over & b.) his professional & educational background are such that nobody that dumb could have achieved it.

Prior to his election as District 4 representative, he served twelve (12) years as a DeKalb County magistrate judge, five (5) years as a county commissioner and three (3) years as chair of the DeKalb budget committee. As a commissioner, his first official act in 2001 was to address the issue of predatory lending and foreclosures.

Rep. Johnson practiced civil and criminal law in DeKalb County for twenty-seven (27) years. A staunch supporter of public education, he is a graduate of the District of Columbia Public Schools, Clark College and the Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University.

Not trying to be a stick in the mud or anything, but if there is one thing I have learned, it's that any time I see something like this on the internet, it always pays to check it out for accuracy first & find out if there is another side to the story.

I think he was quite serious and only came up with that lame excuse because he is embarassed at being outted as a nut bar.

Meh. To each his/her own.

It's just hard for me to believe that a law school graduate, former (12 yr) county magistrate judge, county commissioner & budget committee chair in a county that encompasses one of the largest, most cosmopolitan cities in America, would actually believe that an island could tip over.

Just doesn't add up.

But I do know that people who engage in that type of dry, deadpan wit, often over estimate the ability of others to "get" their sense of humor.

I have experienced that myself first hand for much of my life, so I can empathize.

Well, there have been people in power positions that turned to drugs, too, and made asses of themselves. He sounded loaded to me. And he looked dead serious as well. He might have all that under his belt, but who knows who does what later on in life.

that statement was made back in 2010. Johnson suffers from hepatitis C.
