I think our drought is over.....

Here in California,we have been in a drought for several years. I think it`s over now. It hasn`t stopped raining in weeks. We got 12 inches of rain in the past 24 hours. My son couldn`t even get to work today. His normal route is Highway 20 but he can also take Highway 175.

"ROAD CLOSURES:
LAKE COUNTY: SR20 Closed at Wittier Springs due to flooding. No estimated time of opening.
LAKE COUNTY: SR29 Closed due to flooding. No estimated time of opening.
MENDOCINO COUNTY: SR175 Closed at Hopland and Lakeport due to flooding. No estimated time of opening.

He tried to go his usual route but only trucks were making it through the flooded roadway. He just got a new car on Sunday and being very low to the ground,he wasn`t about to attempt it. He still has his old car ,a truck, but by the time he could get back home to switch vehicles, they had closed the road entirely. The worst part about flooding in our County s that much of the flooding comes from our lake overflowing. Towns south of us are underwater from their rivers flooding, but that water goes down quickly, once the rain stops. The lake takes a long time to recede.

These last few years it seems like it is always to much or to little. New Jersey just got hit with high winds. Our trees are old and near the house. I worry constantly. Our neighbors tree lost branches and limbs and landed in our yard but nothing compared to what some people have to deal with.

California has had some rough weather conditions over the past year....extensive fires last year, followed by huge amounts of rain/snow this year. There should be enough snow pack in the Sierra range to supply all the water the cities and farming areas will need for quite some time.

I hope that the wet ground prevents the fires
this year.

Well, unfortunately, probably not-at least not this year. Sadly, part of the reason we have had such a fire problem is that the trees are extremely stressed from years of drought. Many are beetle infested and are dead or dying. So all the rain will help in the long term, but probably not for a couple of years.

Typically heavy rains are not a sign a drought is ending. Sometimes droughts get massive rainfalls then right back to droughts. Hopefully that is not your situation.

P.S. Does anyone think the weather overall is changing for the worse slowly but surely?

You are correct there. Even though we have been in a drought for several years,we have had periods of torrential rains and then went right back to dry conditions. However, that doesn`t seem to be the case here. And really, the biggest concern is the snowpack in the Sierras. THAT is our greatest water source. They will be measuring it today, officially, but as of yesterday,it was at 126% of normal for APRIL! So I think we will be good for a while.
