There's a local TV news program, where as a service they post job listings. There's this one warehouse that has been posting for a forklift operator for at least the last 5 years. Are forklift operators that hard to find? I'm not sure, but maybe in the US, you have to have a license?

Yes most US States require a training course, and practical testing examination before granting such a license. The OP was searching for a specialized sub type, a counter balance reach fork lift. These are used in warehouses where the rack system can be quite high so the fork lift has to be a special type that can lift high, and also reach in to pull out the skid from the racking. Sometimes that type of operator has to get out at height, and remove a single box from the skid, which requires that the operator be tethered to the machine with a safety harness, to prevent falling. It is somewhat dangerous, and it does require proper training beforehand.

In my experience in operating a conventional low lift fork truck, operators get sloppy after being employed for a while, unless the foreman keeps on them about safe operating practices. Thats when accidents happen. JIM.

A license is required to operate all forklifts here in Australia.
