As a self made suburban gardener with a somewhat too large garden, I agree. I don’t begrudge the labor as it is healthy, creative with a dose of problem solving but I am hiring arborists where lots of climbing or ladders are required now. But if you don’t love all the tending you won’t want to do it. I scarcely grow any food, I just like being surrounded by a slice of enhanced nature.

I met a lady once with a massive flower garden in her backyard. She and her husband had tended it for decades, but now they needed to move to a care facility so they were selling the house.

All I could think of was how the next owners would probably not keep the flower garden going, so much work, but it was a masterpiece of gardening and I certainly told her that.

Actually I did buy the farm, just waiting for the deed to clear, I figure a few more years and the farm will be mine.

We moved out of the city in 1992. At first we rented a one bedroom chalet by a river. We then bought a German shepherd dog. That is when I started long distance walking. I’d walk a country block which was 10 miles easy , everyday. Then we moved further north and purchased a lot of land and had a house built on it. We stayed there for 24 years. Now we live on 24 acres of land overlooking the ocean. It’s a nice house but a lot of work. We like space which is what we have. The sunsets are gorgeous as are the shining stars at night. We can’t imagine city living again but as we get older know that it’s the next step.

On my honeymoon long ago, We stayed with friends we knew from NJ and for something to do one day, they showed us 2 farms they were selling. But they were quite shocked after I talked to my husband and said "let's buy one of those farms."

We came back to beautiful rural NY to handle the closing. I was the family farmer and he worked for VA.
45 Acres one side of road, 6 on the other side.Either my truck or jeep in the horseshoe driveway.
I have better aerial photos showing our two woodlots and the flat 30 acres that my local dairy farmer grows
cash crops on- hay, alfalfa, oats, dent corn, and savanna grass.

Up until the house burned down, I was very content with the 38 acres and creek that I owned. Even now, knowing I probably couldn't do it all again, I still miss the place. Took some drone pictures when we decided to sell.
