I woke up this morning and my laptop task bar had disappeared.

WOW, this happened to me a few times over the years but I googled how to fix it.
In your case, it did need reinstalling.

These are the things that can be so frustrating.
I was in the nationwide Hughes satelitte dish blackout some months ago. I had many trees topped or cut down thinking that was the problem, at first. And had to use the library PC to get my email.

Hughes gave me a credit for that whole month, and they have a new Satelitte in space now. We had a cable rural company installing fast internet with underground cables but they stopped installing halfway down my hill.

I might have switched to it- but still, I am happy with my Hughes plan-even though severe weather can affect my access to the net.

I upgraded my internet connection from 500Mb to a gig. Virgin, my provider, said they needed to send my a new router - which is mad, because it's the very same router I already have. Plugging the new one in, my wife's laptop took less than a minute to connect to the new router. My desktop? A real pain! The network card refused to take an IP from the new router, and when I rebooted it just disabled the network card (the desktop is hard-wired).

Of course, it worked in the end, but the laptop was far easier.

Nationwide outage? I had no problem with them.
