Ice Trays.

I don't have a fridge with an ice maker and wouldn't want one.

I bought a small cube silicone covered ice tray at TJ Max. But I don't know if I like the silicone. It's supposed to be safe but has a bit of a smell and I read the silicone can pick up freezer odors easily. I don't fill it all the way and use the ice the next day. Then refill. I do like the small ice size for the blender.

Got any ice tray recommendations? Thanks.

I bought the hard plastic ones at Wal Mart, they work.

I've been using the old aluminum ones that my MIL had. Yes they are a pain to open but I like the ice they make. One is big cubes. Another is little small ones. I have a,regular size but I like the big and small best.

I saw an old aluminum one at PAWS thrift recently. Wasn't for small cubes though. I don't know if they make them anymore. I'll check Amazon.

I've never had luck with the plastic or silicone ones. I swear by the old metal ones but they have to be old; the new-made metal ones aren't worth a damn supposedly (ex: handles breaking off, etc.). So I bought 2 old ones off eBay. You might be able to find them at thrift shops; I was only able to check a couple thrift shops here in town with no luck so went with eBay. (I could've sworn I chimed in to an earlier thread about this but can't find it now.)

I have an ice maker in the big larder freezer in the barn... but for the one in the kitchen for ease of use, I use silicon trays.. doesn't matter to me what shape they are...but the cubes are much easier to get out of the silicon than those old hard plastic trays.

I sometimes freeze egg yolks in the silicon ice trays as well.. they freeze well, and then I tip them into a freezer bag , and use them when I need an egg for some dish or recipe..

I also have a refrigerator with an ice make, but I prefer using the trays. I don't need 5 pounds of ice. Just a few cubes now and then. I forget where I bought the trays, but they are some type of flexible plastic. i twist the tray and the cubes pop up.

I buy bags of ice to keep in the freezer.

Yep, always the first thing to go, and leaks can do a lot of damage, ruined a hardwood floor that way once... Problem is it can be hard to get one of the better fridges without one.
Glad to see someone else agree on this. Seems most people want one. The leaks is a concern for me.

When I bought that house, the fridge needed to go. I wanted glass shelves so I got the most basic one with glass shelves. The local place was really nice and I think they delivered that day.

I don't know if I'd use enough ice to buy bags but it's an idea.

I haven't seen a lot of the metal ice trays at thrift stores, the recent one at PAWS. I had to go to Etsy to get another stainless Revere 1 quart pot. I was lucky, good seller, the pot was like new. I can't tell it anymore from the one I bought at Kmart in the mid 90's new.

There is a reseller that is usually at PAWS on Tuesday when they open for the week and she clears out a lot of vintage stuff.

My sister in law worked for Sears Service Dept back in the day.
She said the majority of service calls were for icemakers.
I know people who use a lot of ice love them.
For us, we usually fill some trays when we're having company. During the very hot summer months we keep some.
I make the ice then store it in ziplock bags and we use it from those.

Oh now there is a good idea I hadn't thought of. Put them in a bag or a plastic container will keep them covered and odors out. Thanks a lot! :)

I have an icemaker in my kitchen fridge (love it!) but use plastic trays to freeze lemon juice cubes when my tree is loaded with fruit and coffee cubes for summer use when I'm in the mood for iced coffee. Ziplock them when they're frozen.
