Iconic actress Piper Laurie has died aged 91.

Laurie - best-known for her star turn in Carrie as the title character's demented mother, passed away at her Los Angeles home on Saturday. She had been ill for some time.

Manager Marion Rosenberg called the star 'a beautiful human being and one of the great talents of our time.'

In Carrie, Laurie played Margaret White, the fanatically religious and abusive mother of the title character, in a film adaptation of Stephen King's novel.

Her performance earned her another Academy Award nomination.

The actress secured her first Oscar nomination for her work in the 1961 film The Hustler where she played opposite Paul Newman.

I remember her from her role as Catherine Martell in Twin Peaks. She ran the sawmill and was plotting with Benjamin Horne to destroy it. She was delightfully devious.

I remember her as the demented, religious red-headed mother in Carrie. She was great in that role. RIP Piper.

She was a great actress and didn't get enough recognition IMHO. She was in Tim also with Mel Gibson. RIP.
