Vet their requests for membership. Some ask questions to see if a prospective member is legit, but most just automatically accept any requests to join. It's become a haven for spammers.

Report the spammers. One group I was on had them on a regular basis. Reporting became my hobby. Last I looked, I rarely see one.

I have been doing it to the group administrators. The giveaway that it isn't a legit request is -
1) it's an immediate response, like some kind of bot
2) their membership is very recent
3) they often ask for my phone number or post one for me to call to make payment arrangements
4) they only ask "Is this item still available?" without further comment, and
5) they have a blank FB profile page (there may be a photo, but no other info about them)

I see many FB group admins that don't know how to set up a FB group, and then the group becomes a toxic hot mess of spammers and morons interjecting their warped political crap. One of the main features in setting up that types of group is to post The Rules before any members are approved and accepted. There should be notice given that inappropriate comments will be removed without notice. Repeat offenses will result in that member being blocked, either for a specific duration or permanently.

I like Facebook, because it has the garage sales in town, forest fire info,buy and sell, community info. I know everyone on my friends list, most are relatives. Sometimes people seem to think I would friend them because they know someone on my friends list, If I don't know them, they don't get on my friends list. So I have 17 people on my list, and that seems to be 2 too many! Sometimes I wonder if there is a contest to see who gets the most friends?

I run a FB group and questions must be answered before even thinking of being accepted. There are requirements and I vet their personals. I have rejected many.
