I know it's not kidney failure. I have seen kidney failure and the poor dog or cat just pees wherever they are. This is controlled and planned. Sophie as a human would be on every psych med there is. Still energetic to a fault and totally attached to me. But being a brat in her peeing behavior.

We have diapers that work. The cats laugh at her, but both dogs go into the yard at around 10pm and Sophie gets her diaper after. Tonight at maybe 8:30 pm she soaked me and hubby's bed. Any advice is welcome.

Hmm. I would take her to the vet, especially if when she pees, it is a large amount. A dog I had began doing that--she was house trained and all but she started squatting and going in the house quite regularly, even in front of me! It didn't take long to figure this was out of character for her, I mean, dogs can have accidents now and again especially as they age but this was more than that. She was diagnosed with liver cancer and placed on a low-protein diet which really helped. She would have no parts of diapering and we knew the carpeting would need replacing so we just kind of persevered. I am not suggesting your dog has a serious problem but if this is abnormal behavior, maybe a trip to the doc might be a good idea, they don't always display other symptoms and they can't tell us they can't help it. I'm wondering if it could even be something like an allergy, the vet should be able to advise.

If it is out of character for her then maybe talk to a vet. My little chihuahua does tiny little pees and poops & I have her trained to let me know when she needs outside because they have small bladders and can't hold it like bigger dogs. There is a plastic grass dog mat that she can use in one of the bathrooms and she knows where that is. On occasion when I've slept late she has gone in the bathroom and used that doggie grass mat with the shallow container under the grass. I know that idea is not practical for larger dogs that pee large amounts. Sorry, I have no good advice.

No not out of character. Callie gets a walk first and she pees on something. You close all the bedroom doors tight and hope for the best.

Maybe a bladder infection. Try and get a urine sample before you go to the Vet to save time. Not the easiest thing to do. I ran around shoving a plastic bag under our dog when it looked like she was about to go. They don't need much. Good luck. Could also be her way of getting your attention.

I agree about the vet visit, it's probably something physical. Especially with older dogs, incontinence, especially during sleep, is a common problem. I think too many times we humans put people personalities on our animals and start to imagine that something is done spitefully, or to get back at us, etc. We overthink things sometimes, they just want to please and she was probably as surprised about the wet spot and the fuss that followed as you were.

Is she drinking a lot of water.. Seeming to be starving and always wanting food? Panting a lot...? as well as peeing a lot. I had a dog that did this and she had Cushings disease.

One of my old dogs starting doing similar things, and they discovered she had diabetes.

I agree with SB; my vet says emphatically that dogs don't break housebreaking to "get even" or be a brat. Once housebroken, they have a strong desire not to foul their area. If they do it, then there is either something wrong or you didn't let them out when you should have, and they are probably just as upset as you are when they do it. Thus sayeth my vet.

Take Sophie to the vet and get a diagnosis.

It is called 'Leaky Bitch' or Incontinence in Female Dogs. Unfortunately our little furkid suffers with it as it is to do with loss of Oestrogen like a doggy Menopause. Millie takes a product called Propalin which treats urinary incontinence in spayed female dogs. It works for Millie so may be worth a try. It comes as a syrup and you put the required amount of drops onto her food or directly in her mouth. Check with your Vet.
