If I have to have a cane, Wal Mart or Elegant? What about you? Wal Mart and Elegant, yes for me.

I got a Wal Mart cane for walking befause of my knee. It just gives out without notice. Then I found these elegant cans for women, and for men. I bought it from Amazon, but at the same price. I don't like having to use one, so I don't unless it is obvious it would help. So, I spent a little more for a nicer one, and I don't mind spending a little extra for me to walk better. Now, some of them are hundres of dollars and probably well worth it because of the art, design, etc. There are quite a few different styles and colors to choose from. Let us know what you think.

I use mine much more to lean on than to walk. With that in mind I bought one with a wide handle that is easier on my hands. I got it at CVS.
I have had both knees replaced and they work fine.
I bought my wife a folding cane with flowers printed on it. My sister liked it so much that I bought her one like it. Got them on Amazon.

I like the flowers also! I also found one that had a lady bug for the handle. Sooo cute! But, not what I thought I would like for my hand to rest on.

I use a cane only for walking my dog in our wooded pathways; too many tree roots and uneven terrain.

How about this one-

I have lower back problems and currently a displaced kneecap so I have to use a cane occasionally ... not all the time thank goodness, but mainly to help me get out of the chair/bed or in and out of the car.. and I have a few...

Usually flowered patterned types, but this one is my latest one ( all terrain) because it holds my weight without slipping on the floor when I pull myself up... also it stands on level ground all by itself, so no falling onto the floor and trying to bend to pick it up...

My current cane happens to be a Carex brand, forgot where I got it, dark red metal with a handle shaped like Hollydolly's. I tried one with the little base like hers but it wouldn't stand up alone & got in my way. I had a similar model before that was a folding one, but it wouldn't stay folded unless tied. Popped out back open in church one time LOL. first make sure which TYPE works best for you, because just about every type is available with different looks at various prices. Price wise for any of the mobility aids I recommend Walmart or Amazon over w=green (which I think is a ripoff) or the dedicated medical equipment stores, unless insurance is paying for all of it.

I hadn't used a cane 'til I passed 80 but now I need one, especially on uneven ground. I bought one of the new foldable types (someone posted a pic above) but ended up using my grandfathers old fashioned wooden cane with the the curved handle. He was born in 1865, I have no idea when he started using this cane but I remembering his having it when I was a child in the late 30's - early 40's.

I have another of his wooden canes that has a plaque attached and it reads "Boston American Legion Convention - 1930". He wasn't a vet but somehow ended up with the cane. Maybe it belonged to my dad as he was a vet and belonged to the Legion, but he never used a cane?

I don't need or use a cane, but have to ask the question - why would anyone use a plain Walmart anything when there are other, more beautiful, options?

Dave, how nice that you are able to use some things that you associate so closely with your grandfather.

I was using one last year when I was in the boot. It was a folding one that, like someone mentioned earlier, wouldn't stay folded unless I wrapped a Velcro strip around it. I got onto an airplane and stuck the thing, folded up but not secured, in my seat pocket. It promptly popped out and poked my seat mate. Embarrassed, I was.....

My wife sewed a little bag to put her folded cane in.

I have another cane for traveling, it has a folding stool incorporated in it. It is a good concept, but I had to redo it to be tall enough for 6'2"me. It had gone as far as Alaska.

It is hard to accept, but my older (lol) sister bought me a nice hand carved cane of simple design with a pistol grip. I have done wood carving and I am now looking for cane stock so I can custom carved one of a kind if I am going to use it. My hopes of my balance ever improving are slowly fading, but I just have trouble with the idea.

If I needed a new cane I would be tempted to buy two or three inexpensive but serviceable canes and place them in strategic locations in my apartment, automobile, etc...

I would also look at some sort of strap or wrist lanyard that would help me retrieve it if I drop it or to prevent me from walking off without it.

I have an old umbrella stand in my apartment with an assortment of old canes from various relatives and I will probably start out with one of those if the time comes.

Don't overthink it just do what feels right for you and your situation.

Good luck!

That's what I have Aunt Bea.... a cane in every room, upstairs and down... and they all have wrist lanyards..

All are foldable and have little bags with carrying straps, 2 are patterned Pink ( floral ) one shiny black, and the latest a red as in my picture previously.

I have to have them strategically placed because my back isn't choosy where it decides to ''go out'' when it does..I could be at the top of the stairs, or in the kitchen.. and after a couple of times of the spasms taking my legs from under me without warning , I decided to have the canes everywhere to help me get up off the floor!!

I had a broken leg, ankle & hip all on the same side and my balance isn't the greatest anymore. I got a cane at Walmart and it does every bit as good as an expensive one would. That extra buck isn't going to make you walk any better.

I don't live close to a WalMart and that's the only reason I would not get one there. We have Drug Mart and I think they have canes. If I needed one that would be the place I'd go. A plain, simple one would be fine for me as cost is a big factor for me.

My wife uses a folding cane. I had an African cane my daughter brought from Kenya. Made from hardwood. Dropped it and broke it a while back. Didn't use it except in the house because it was heavy. I mostl.y use an aluminum adjustable cane I bought years ago at a garage sale. I carried it with me on my motorcycle for several years. I didn't need a cane but figured anyone who rode a bike long enough would sooner or later, need a cane.. I've tried several wooden canes but none have felt as good or as secure as my adjustable. A person ought to use a cane that feel right.

The novelty of carving my own cane is exciting but not very practical. Wooden canes may very well look nice but the cheaper aluminium ones are far lighter. The lighter ones are the ones I’d go with.

Ruthanne,

Medicare/Medicaid will usually pick up 80% of the cost for durable medical equipment if you have a prescription from your doctor.

A cane is not a big deal but every little bit helps.

I have a regular wooden cane which I bought 15 yrs ago at a local medical supply store before I had my partial knee surgery.
I used it for a time after the surgery. Its main function now is opening the curtains in my bedroom
If I ever need another one,I'll go to Walgreens ,never been to Walmart Sue
