If I Wanted to Be Evil...

I've posted elsewhere the problem we're having with our mail carrier. We have a screened front porch. Inside is a solid wooden front door. There is a mail slot to the outside of the porch door. There is a secure lock on the porch door. Inside the porch is a picture window. So the dogs can be seen and heard, but unless they smash through the front window and then break through a porch window too...very unlikely...they aren't getting out.

Even with the porch locked and the wood door open for ventilation they cannot get out of the house. The lock is such that you need opposing thumbs to open it. Even so we keep getting notes on our mail about "dangerous dogs". It makes it sound like they're happily romping in our front yard. Even if they're in the backyard, they cannot get to the front. We have double fencing facing the sidewalk.

Today at work I saw the Halloween stuff they just put up. One item made me laugh out loud. Oh besides the demon rat that makes ratty noises and the eyes glow ( my daughter has six, they make ratty noises but the eyes don't light up). There is a bendable dog skeleton. Motion activated the eyes glow, the teeth chomp and it barks. If I set it up by our mail slot we'd probably never get delivery again:rolleyes:

Could be your mail carrier is concerned about his fingers getting bit by your dogs when he's putting the mail through the slot. Your dogs might be waiting for him to open the slot and barking perhaps? Is so, I understand his predicament. The dogs (and cats) in my apartment building love to wait and watch the mail come in through the slots.

I have had the same issue. My sweet dog sometimes likes to lay on the porch on the cool cement. My porch is enclosed by wrought iron grillework floor to ceiling, with a locked door onto the porch from outside. The dog cannot get out or stick her head out to bite someone, even if she wanted to (she is about as likely to fly as to bite someone -- she might lick a person to death, though). The mailbox is outside the grille. I still get the "vicious dog on porch" notes, even if she is out there sleeping.

GEEZ!

Our mail lady carries dog treats and gives to the dogs on her route. Our dogs go out and wait for her. They told her to stop doing that but I don't think she listened to them. Actually, she's been sick a couple months (she's 77) and her daughter in law does her route most of the time. This is out in the country so we don't have mail slots.

My late husband delivered mail for three summers while he was in college. He said his worst day was when he got bit on the butt by a Chihuahua. He was walking down a sidewalk that paralleled a raised porch and the dog launched itself off the porch and clamped onto the seat of his pants. Luckily, his pants was all the dog got but he said he twirled around twice before the dog let go. He had a small hole in the uniform pants, so he had to report the incident and he said the guys back at the post office ribbed him for two years about it.

Actually most of the carriers just wing the mail under the door. Wide enough for several magazines but even with the mail slot not enough space for teeth.

My husband was just telling someone yesterday, the only time he's been dog bitten was by a chihuahua, that was on the ankle. Your husband is probably one of the few humans around to be bitten on the butt by one. :)

:lofl: you're on form today Linda... :D...sorry Jujube ,

We had a German Shepherd, same kind of story as the OP...indoors behind the glass etc, and the Post Office stopped bringing our mail unless we ensured the dog was nowhere to be seen when the postman came. Annoying as it was way back in the 70's...at least it could be done because the post always arrived around the same time each day..7 or 8am...nowadays it would be sooo much harder to comply with their request because the mail arrives whenever the postie feels like delivering it...can be 5 o'clock in the afternoon sometimes..

Sounds like a person who hates dogs. Can't see how anyone would could feel threaten if your dogs are behind 2 doors and they do not have to open any doors to deliver the mail. Maybe go to your local post office and discuss it with someone there. Take pictures of your porch and show where your dogs are located.

Sounds like a person who hates dogs.

Or maybe someone who has been bitten by one.

I hesitate to comment because people are more defensive of their dogs than they are of their children.

I’m not a dog hater (even though I was bitten by one who supposedly never bites). I’ve lost count of the times I’ve walked down the street and crossed to the other side even though the owner is yelling “He is friendly, she has never bitten anyone”, etc. One of my neighbors is a very nice man who walks his dog without a leash - which he can get into trouble for. I often stop and chat with him, and the dog seems nice enough. But I don't let my guard down.

I’m guessing the notes have been left because the carrier hears barking/growling.

I don't think this is evil, but I don't think putting it at your mail slot will accomplish anything. It certainly won't make the carrier stop leaving notices. Solution: ~~>You might want to consider a mailbox service or P. O. Box.

Maybe the postman in question doesn't hate dogs so much as is terrified by 'dogs' in general. I've got two little chihuahua's, one four pounds, the other seven pounds and neither will bite unless you're a stranger and reach out to pet them, because they're totally afraid of strangers. But if you mind your own business and keep your hands away, they're fine and just lay there on their cushions.

We had an electrician neighbour who was so terrified of dogs that even seeing them on the porch caused panic so we always locked them in the other room when he came to work on our electrical. Maybe some of these people mentioned have had serious attacks as children that set them up for panic attacks as adults?

I don't hate dogs, I'm not terrified of dogs. (As mentioned) I was bitten once (10 yrs ago). I saw my younger brother mauled badly by our family dog when we were kids - he was taken away in an ambulance. My niece and nephew each were bitten by their own dogs.

A person doesn't have to be "terrified" of dogs in order to be cautious and leery of dogs. Being on guard around dogs is very smart. Dogs bite - it's one of the things they do. Sometimes they bite fo no reason. The barking and growling can be unnerving. Since the post office has signs printed up it's obvious this is not an unusual thing. Even if they didn't have signs - dogs chase and attack mail carriers.

Carpet cleaner, utility, cable company, furniture delivery - they ALL ask me in advance if there is a dog on the premises.

Options: get a P. O. Box or you'll keep getting notices (mail will eventually be held for pick up).

I think it's just the bias against the bully breeds. That they're like a magical land shark and will chew through brick. It's ridiculous...I'm sure if the same carrier saw a Golden in the window even with teeth bared it would be a different story...then they'd just see noisy dog.

I love dogs. Most are well behaved and loving. I do see the side of the mail carrier in cases where a dog can get to the carrier and cause harm. Our carrier delivers to community mailboxes every two blocks so they don't go door to door. When I lived in San Diego years ago the postman carried a pepper spray for attacking animals.

I do too, a mailman has every right to leave notices in cases like that. But in this case where the dogs are in the house, behind 2 doors.....the door to the house and a door to the front porch, there is no threat to him/her. He doesn't have to enter either door, just insert the mail in a drop from outside of the porch. It would be ridiculous for a home owner to have to get a box at the P.O. due to a situation like this.

I have been around dogs all my life and still feel a dog in its home/territory (which could even mean in a car) has to potential to react as a protector of what is his. For some people even barriers between the dog and themselves is still not enough. Never mind those who have been traumatized by a dog. Sometimes it's just a no win situation.
