If you are on the fence about adopting a pet

I do not understand this post, if you look at the previous poster Loves Tulips they state very succinctly the benefits of having a pet. How does one acquire it other than through adoption , from either a shelter or a breeder. So many animals are homeless and it is up to us as humans to help as many as we can. I have a rescue dog from Mexico and a cat from one of our local rescues, I would not be without them. I have made arrangements for them, they will be taken care of If I wasn’t able to. At my age I would not get another pet but if able I would gladly foster.

Of course children should be adopted but by young couple's, i know that many seniors are parents to their grandchildren but is it by choice? If they had their life over would they do it again.
Adopting a child entails a legal proceeding.

Adopting a pet just means you now own a pet. During my life I have purchased pets or had them given to me by a neighbor.

I think it's wonderful that people foster pets but I would never want to do it myself. Fall in love with some great little doggie or kitty and then they're gone to go live with someone else and I get to miss them and be sad over yet something else? My sadness meter is already full; no thanks.

I simply meant we should not equate adopting a human child with getting a pet.

I have thought of getting another pet since I lost my Lil’Bear (Bichon) over a year ago … and different options as to what kind of pet.

Options aren’t that good when you aren’t fully able to give of yourself in their care. Would not be fair to the animal.

This is not to shame those that know their limits and realize that having an animal to care for would be too much. That's a very good thing.

At 76 I now have 4. The youngest is just turning 2. The oldest is guesstimate, 8 or 9. I knew my physical capabilities when I brought these guys into my life and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Most of the time.

They range in size of 16 pounds up to 51. I already know three of them would have homes if anything happened to me. Obviously I'm pretty confident I'll be around for them until their end.

Nobody does that - they just use the same word. The word still has the same meaning- doesn't mean adopting a pet is same as adopting a child.
Like I say I am dog sitting if I am looking after a dog, or people are fostering a dog if they are looking after it till it's permanent home. Doesn't mean it is same as baby sitting or fostering children.

Is just being petty over semantics.
