Before the virus thing I used to go on the road a couple times a month staying motels/hotels. Now I don't. I wonder about the pillows. They can wash the cases but not the pillows. If I had to stay in one now I would bring my own pillows and Lysol spray and wipes and my own towels.
 

My wife and I used to really enjoy just taking off at the spur of the moment and go anywhere within 6-7 hours and just park the car at a hotel and then do nothing for a few days. With this darn virus, my wife has become somewhat timid about traveling, so now we do other things that aren’t as exciting as getting out and about.

But, yeah, taking your own pillow is a good idea.
 
My sister has always traveled with her own pillows. I do carry my own zippered pillow case covers but not pillows. The only hotel I plan to stay in now is my timeshare. I know how they do things there but I'm cautious just the same. I spray or wipe down everything with Lysol disinfectant when I first go into the suite and wash the dishes in the dishwasher. If I had to stay someplace else it would be no different. Guests should really also check for bedbugs too. Since I travel by bus, not car, I can't bring pillows, extra towels, etc with me.
 

I’ve always traveled with my own towels / pillows / cosmetics and most of all my OWN coffee mugs
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen motel cleaners rinse a used cup under the tap and then dry with a USED bath towel 😨 then put it on motel bench for the next tenant to use

We traveled to Queensland and back this time last year and of the 6 locations we stayed in on the
4.500 km return trip I seen it happen right before my eyes in 4 of the accommodations we stayed in
 
Normally I wouldn’t have taken my pillows because of the bed bugs.

Now I’d take pillows. Strip the coverings off the bed. Put down a sheet & sleeping bag.

The hotel is always wiped down with Lysol wipes.

I hadn’t thought about the towels. Depends how much room I have after all those other provisions. The hotel‘s have been washed in hot water, so I think I’m ok with those.

Since we carry a cooler with lunch supplies, I use my own dishes.
 
Out of necessity we lived in a large reputable hotel for several months last year.

I wasn't very impressed with their so called "daily" cleaning of the rooms. They always seemed to be understaffed and IMO some of the cleaners were poorly trained as well.

Hopefully their cleaning protocol has improved considerably since then. However, I simply don't trust them because of what we experienced and will not be going back there or for that matter, to any hotel anytime soon.

First of all, unless I could afford the best, it would be out of the question. Regardless, I do take my own pillows everywhere. They were my mom's and are feathered, just about shot, but the most comfortable ever.
 
i use to work in a nice motel(i thought)we had to wash the sheets as we cleaned the room
i was wondering why the other girls got thru faster than me
they would take the top sheet and put it on the bottom and the bottom sheet and put it on the top and than put the blankets on
so they had no sheets to wash-i always put clean sheets on
 
I don't see how bringing your own pillows & sheets would help. You're still sleeping on the bed. A really used bed.
And, if it could talk, you wouldn't even touch it.

I would. I always bring my own pillows, double pillowcases. Bed bugs are killed by heat so if you are traveling in summer, and if you are worried, leave your stuff in a locked car for a few hours. It gets like 110-120. Bedbug problem solved.
 
About the only hotel rooms we stay in are at the casinos. They do an excellent job of cleaning the rooms, and with this virus, the precautions they are taking make these places among the safest places to go....IMO.

My daughter had to call the desk to have a used sheet replaced in a Casino.

I do believe that this is an isolated case as they have a reputation to keep..
 
If we needed to travel within driving distance, we'd bring our RV and sleep in that. If required to fly - and I can't imagine what would compel me to do so - I'd use a highly reputable hotel, bring disinfectant wipes to hit every surface, and take along two sets of my own pillow cases to double over the pillows.

Bedbug searches are part of my routine immediately upon checking in to a hotel or cruise state room. I check the mattress carefully, including the seams and behind the headboard. I look in all the drawers, too. The whole process takes about 5 minutes. Never found evidence of them, by the way.

I think it may depend on where you stay too. We have a new motel here in town but I doubt it will be long before it's infested. Seems to be lots of bedbugs and roaches here in this community. Creeps me out.

My opinion regarding the cleanliness of hotel and motel rooms... they've always been a filthy disgrace.

That's why I always check and have done so since bedbugs started proliferating again in the US.

I got scabies when in my 20s. Ugh. Thought I had a terrible rash and eventually went to a dermatologist who immediately diagnosed the problem and prescribed treatment.

The doc told me not to bother trying to figure out where I got them because people pick up parasites anywhere and everywhere. He assured me that they're not indicators of one's hygiene or housekeeping habits. Same is true for bedbugs, head lice, et al. They have no particular preference for dirty surroundings. They're often found in places of poor hygiene only because they aren't immediately addressed and are allowed to continue multiplying.
 
I will have to deal with this at Christmas. I usually drive to Tennessee from my home in Texas. It's a long drive, 800 miles, and IMO too far for one person to drive straight thru so I have always stayed in a motel at about the half-way point. It's a moderate cost motel that I use because I travel with a dog and they accept dogs. There are nicer motels, more expensive, but I will probably change to one of them from the cheap place. I also plan to get a travel sleep sack so I don't have to use the motel sheets, etc. Won't even consider flying. I may just stay put this year and not risk Covid, flu, bed bugs or crazy drivers.
 
Personally, I don't think we'll stay at a hotel due to Covid-19 and BED BUGS. Itching already. Lucky are those who own an RV. I'd love one but I'm afraid hubby would fall asleep behind the wheel and get us killed. :oops: o_O:sneaky:


I don't know how true this is but I heard that a toddler caught the virus from her mother's lab coat! The mother tested negative. Little girl is doing well. But, I think she may have caught the virus elsewhere.
