If you saw a sign "Help Yourself" on a restaurant salad bar, how would you interpret it?

To me that means "Take all you want." and I went multiple times. The restaurant owner came over and said threateningly, "Make that you last trip!" I pointed to the sign. He replied, "That doesn't mean 'All you can eat', it means you just serve yourself since the waiter will not be bringing it." I noticed the next time I patronized the place, they had done away with the salad bar. I assumed other people were making multiple trips because they interpreted it as I did. The place has now gone OOB.

I would interpret "help yourself" at a salad bar as "grab a plate and get your own food, don't wait for us to seat you or bring your dinnerware or utensils." If it would be all you can eat, I'd think that would be advertised as such.

Now that said, salad bars usually *are* open to go back a second time, but personally I wouldn't take advantage of it more than twice.

We very rarely eat out ,when and if we do …and… they have a salad bar we take what we want ..once ……
as it’s usually mushed muck ……like pigs have been into it …..after a few have served
~themselves ….never seen any signs to say help yourself ..they usually tell you when you order the meal

Did you order a meal ?
At a few restaurants that we've eaten at where it's a self serve salad bar we enjoy a single salad while waiting for whatever main course was ordered.

you checked them all knight to bishop checkmate??
This thread wasn't still active so I took that to mean no interest in guessing what S.I.T.T. meant. I'm certainly not a mensa member so guessing how S.I.T.T. related to a salad bar.

we have pubs that do that. The salad bar is free to help yourself, as long as you're buying a main course.. However the salad bowls are made delberately small so you can't take much... so I will take some tomatoes and coleslaw for example .. then return for another bowl to add another couple of items.. but then I wouldn't go back...

When I was young and hungry I would have made as many trips as I wanted to any kind of open food bar, serve yourself or all you can eat would have meant the same thing to me. If the restaurant wanted to limit your trips then call it a one trip salad bar.

Thanks for the clue of Trough for the 2nd. T.

I'm certain if you do the same for S. I. T.

I'll get it.
