I'm new here, wanting to learn & share

Hello all. I live in western Canada. I'm nearly 76, living on a mountain-valley acreage. Quite active, as is my three-years-younger wife.

Retired magazine/newspaper journalist & regional business-association manager. Involved in our community. Growing largish vegetable, berry, and flower gardens.

Enjoy nature, music, reading, and more.

I look forward to discussions on this forum.
If you were 22 years old again, would you still choose the magazine/newspaper career ? I see the death of the local weekly Canadian newspapers all the time. Even the nationals are struggling to remain relevant in today's media circus. What would your advice be for the young person about to get into the employment market in your "mountain valley " area ? Skilled trades, University degree, or what ? JimB.

I suppose I'd recommend learning how to write for different modalities -- print, online, documentary-video narrative, technical manuals, etc. Most of my markets were geographically distant. Because I was freelancing during a lot of my years, I did several sorts of writing, including the occasional promo for the sorts of businesses I could relate to. The balance within the range of writers' contracts changes. Basic writing skills & understanding of how to relate to 'human interest' don't change so much.

In my life I've done some carpentry, basic metal work, basic electrical work, water-system management, small-engine work, etc (though I'm unticketed in these). I've got plenty of respect for the skilled trades, and I think that can be a very good way to go. University education can be good if one inclines to teaching, forestry, field biology, health fields, etc.

So I'd say it depends mostly on the person's own interests & inclinations.

I was new here awhile ago, I wish I could share with you the things I've learned and things shared but why spoil it for you, you will learn and have to share so I leave it up to you find your own way, have fun!

Hi Joel...

welcome-London-Big-ben.webp
Hollydolly, in 2005 my wife & I travelled in Scotland and then down by train from Inverness to London. Our stay in London was about a week— all too short, clearly. But the red phone boxes were actually in use then, and I wonder if (with the ubiquitous cell phone) they're still maintained in London? (Or elsewhere in less-urban Britain?)

The phone boxes are still in use in mainly towns and villages rather than the cities.. but not containing phones. Instead they are used to house defibrillators..

Many many were sold.. and the public bought them, to use in their gardens (yards).. for various things.. like small cocktail Bars.. etc..

In many villages the Phone boxes which don't house defibrillators are used in various other ways..like these..
