I'm looking through the freezer, cabinets, etc. looking for things that need to be used up before they would need to be tossed.
You know, the odds and ends like pesto you froze last year.
Almond butter 3 months past "best buy date".
Do you stock up on things for a certain diet then decide to go on a different diet?
I'd bought 2 bags of popcorn then started eating low carb. Now I see that popcorn is a great fiber snack so it's back in. That will get used now before it gets too old.
I have a lot of oatmeal. Found a good healthy recipe using almond butter and oatmeal so I will be baking cookies!

lick lips.gifsend me some of those cookies please...
just cannot buy anything like that in the stores.

I'm somewhat obsessive-compulsive about using up foods before they spoil. Of course, from having worked as a mechanic on food service equipment in commercial kitchens, I'm very aware of the FIFO system of rotating food stock and using the oldest before breaking into newer stock.

Good for you, hearlady. I hate wasting food because something gets pushed to the back of the cupboard or fridge. This is a good reminder that I should sort through my pantry. In my former home I used to keep extra stock in the basement and then I’d forget I had it.

Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without!

According to Google

"Use it up... Wear it out... Make it do... Or do without" - what a great slogan! It was coined by the War Advertising Council during World War II to promote the dual need to conserve scarce resources and to help keep prices down by not generating excess demand.I

I don't think that's quite right. First used during the Depression according to my mother and grandmother. I heard it a lot when I was a kid, especially during the War but so often all my growing-up years that it stuck. I still live by it, and it goes against my grain to just throw anything out...especially food!

"Young people these days......."
We are old enough to be hold outs of the depression era from our parents or grandparents.
I think that younger people toss out a lot. I know my kids do.
I was kind of shocked when I read that a good portion of climate change is the result of food waste. Politics aside, I believe this!

I have a lot of things I stocked up on during the pandemic that I have been trying to use. I hate throwing food away too. About the only thing I ever throw away is milk. I only use it for cooking and even if I get the little single serving bottle I don't use it all.

Speaking of food getting old, did you know celery will grow in the fridge? Mine is growing new stalks and busting out of the package. I was going to try to use it up and realized it is just growing more!

Sometimes we "eat out of the freezer" until it's practically bare. I get overrun with odds and ends in the freezer and it's a challenge to make a meal out them. We end up eating some odd combinations of food!

Decided I should check out the snack shelf. The unopened potato chips were calling my name. The chip dip not so much when I saw it was growing something. Strange, it was only a few months old; still not stale dated.

This looks really good. Do you think I could use regular butter and add about a half or so teaspoon of almond extract? Almond butter is kind of pricey!
I'm sure you could sub for butter or peanut butter. Almond butter IS pricey. That's why I want to use it up before it gets too old. Lots of calories in it too so I may not replace it.
Oh, word of warning. The cookies spread so leave plenty of room.

I've heard of regrowing celery but never heard of it regrowing in the pkg in the frig!
