My mother-in-law has given me $10 for my birthday each year since 1970. I've never gotten a raise! Back then, it was worth $66.64. Last birthday, it was worth $10.19!

Your post reminded me of an aunt that used to always give me a book of lifesavers and three dollars every year for Christmas.

I try to remember that when I need to stuff an envelope or slip a few bucks to a kid these days.

It's hard for me to wrap my poor old head around how much some kids make on their part-time jobs these days and how much it costs them to be kids these days.

That is a good website. I went back through all my tax returns to 1963 and had that site calculate what those earnings would be worth in today's dollars. It was an eye opener and the biggest takeaway from that exercise was that "inflation is a real enemy."
