last night was a doozy. Couldn't find the Brain On/Off switch. I think it was too much politics and my brain began playing the 'What If ....' game. Dumb, I know.

What keeps you awake at night or are you blessed with good sleep? How many hours is a 'good night' for you? 6 or 7 works for me but anything less and I'm a mess the next day.

I have a terrible time sleeping. Tried all the tricks, No reading in bed, no eating after 6 PM. Turn off the TV early, room cool and dark. Nothing helps. My mind races and I worry to much about things I have no control over. The hubby snores so when we travel I take Ambien. I sleep like a baby. The problem is I began to take it at home also. Wonderful feeling to get 7 or 8 hours of sleep and wake up refreshed. Ambien has a dark side. It isn't physically addictive but mentally it is. I think of all sorts of reasons why I should take it. I'm going to have a busy day tomorrow, I'm going out so I want to feel my best. The list goes on and on. Best to try over the counter meds first and the tricks listed above. As for me, I'm trying to get by with every other day on the Ambien and then increase the time in between.

Try staying up later, like reading a book in your recliner. Lay off the pills !!!

All of us animals need sleep and will do it naturally if tired enough.

I live alone so I'm free to be up rattling around when it suits me.

I sleep about six hour at night and take a nap most every afternoon, it works for me.

I've found that a very low strength Valium does the trick when I have one of those "brain-churning" nights. I average about 2-4 times a month. My insurance company is positive that I'm a raging drug addict and insists that I be evaluated for drug addiction each year. That's insulting in my opinion, so I don't go through my insurance for the Valium. It only costs me $3 more for 30 pills, so it's no great strain.

I cannot remember the last time I slept 6 or 7 hours without waking.

Men especially in their latter years suffer from prostate problems and just have to get up.

Once up it's difficult to get back to sleep.

One night I woke up at 2 a.m. so decided to get up and see how long I could go before I conked out. I made it to 2 p.m. the next day.

I occasionally wake around 2 am and can't get back to sleep. Sometimes I get up and spend time on the computer until I'm tired.
If I don't get 6 or 7 hours of sleep a night then I'm really tired the next day. That's not good if I have an appointment and show up half asleep.

I have those nights occasionally but not often. I normally need about 7 1/2 hrs. but my problem is regardless of how late I'm awake, I wake up around 4 or 5 a.m. I have still been awake at 12:00 and will wake up at 4 or 5. It never fails. It must be in my genes because my brother says he has the same problem. What causes it, I don't know.

I've found that taking a sip of flavored Vodka, about 9PM works great. I take about 1/2 a shot, and by 10:30, my eyes are starting to droop, I hit the sack, and the next thing I know its about 7AM. A bottle of this stuff last me about 4 or 5 weeks, so that's a lot cheaper than taking any pills. Most doctors/studies say that a small drink of alcohol is good for a person. When we're at the casino, and I'm all hopped up from gambling, I usually have the "drinks" lady bring me a small glass of wine around 9 or 10PM, and that works great, too.
