Is "flab" part of getting older??? Ugh.

I am not overweight. But I have FLAB between my armpits and the top of my bra. It bulges!!! (So far, it doesn't droop!) What IS this!!!!! -- do all the women here have it? :( I also have flab around the waist. My boyfriend calls it "love handles" but I call it "yuk flab" :p His worry is that his stomach is getting fatter. He's slim, too, and it doesn't look to me like he has a big tummy, but of course it's his perspective that he's having. So is this a "normal" part of getting old? ...Just one more thing....

Yes. Muscle tone is somewhat diminished and any weight loss leaves excess skin. Skin also loses elasticity .

Go to a good corsetiere and get professionally fitted for new bras; your present ones don't fit you anymore. There may be some custom work involved, maybe not. If it really matters to you, be prepared to pay- and also be more comfortable.

Yup, it is a normal part of aging. Genetics, I believe, has a lot to do where on your body excess fat will land first--no matter if you are careful about how many calories you take in. I've gained excess fat evenly all over--well, much in my abdomen. Awful looking. ;(

Depends------How old are you and your boyfriend?

So far, even at 81 years old, my muscle tone is still pretty good. But to keep it that way, I'd better get on the ball & get back to exercising in ways safe for my age.

I've gained about 20 lbs since High School which after attending my 50 year High School reunion two years ago, I believe is probably better than average. However my waist is 6 inches bigger. And that's with me exercising regularly.

I love that cartoon !!!!!!! LOL I have "the flab" ,too. My shape runs in my family. If you outline me,my sister & my mom - we all fit in the same outline. It's a Curse ~~~~~

Hi everybody!! I'm answering you all at once, since so many responses!!! Very much appreciated. Several things came up -- well, I don't want to get fitted for a new bra, I don't think anyway. I will check this out, though, because the flab looks so bad with my sleeveless shirts. I'm 75, and my boyfriend is, too.

Aunt Bea, the cartoon is hilarious!!!! I have saved it to my Humor file. At this point I don't have anyone to send it to -- some of my friends are too young to "get it" and some, while older, would NOT want to get this "news." Ha. Yes, I've gained since high school, too. In high school I was five ft. 10 1/2 inches, 117 lbs. Now I am 5 ft. 8 1/2 at 150 lbs. I have lost weight lately. I prefer to weigh 146, but the only time I got down that low was when I had flu for 3 weeks. So normal weight for me is 148.5. Go for it, Elsie! As for my exercise, I have a set of hand weights. I like them a lot, but don't get to them as often as I really should. I know how to use them, from yoga class.

I think we all get flabby and lose muscle tone in old age, unless I'm dressed up for something (which is extremely rare), I just wear a comfortable 'sports bra', not too much digging going on there. :p I think I gained around a pound a year since I was in my 20s from 118 to around 150ish, I prefer to be 140 but I go up and down with those 10 pounds, so easy to put them on and so hard to dump them.

I think most people have problems losing any loose flab/skin under the arms even with the strictest of work outs. From what I experienced, you lose any muscle tone you've gained if you stop the workouts for any amount of time. All the women in my family are like me, apple shaped, so even when I was thin I had some kind of stomach thing going on. No hips, thigh problems though and skinny arms and legs.

My flab settled in my stomach and then gravity hit it, ugh, don't know if I'll ever be able to get rid of it. I plan to start exercising...I've been planning for quite awhile...:playful:

Thanks for two more funny remarks. Well, at least we've all been "validated," right?

If you need to impress, there is always someone coming up with something .. Spanx for the arms is out there:) ...
It looks comfortable really. I don't intend to buy, but so many younger people buy this stuff up.

Understanding loss of fat and the effect it has on skin as we age is explained at this web site.

https://medlineplus.gov/ency/article/004014.htm

Wrinkles are the worst since they cause problems. I'm pretty sure everyone understands the concept of suction and how water improves the ability to hold something. Wrinkles have that void or suction ability. The fun of showering together like we did when we were young is impossible now. Two wet wrinkly bodies can be stuck together for hours.

Hyaluronic acid serum and Aveeno daily moisturizer can help keep the flabbies away, but I must add exercising is critical to any success in defeating flab. It sounds like you're already doing that, though. :love_heart:

If I got one of those Spanx arm-toning girdle thingies, it would have to be made out of the kind of elastic that NASA is looking into to sling-shot things into space.

And when you DO strap on a girdle, arm or otherwise, that flab has to go SOMEWHERE...... I have a very industrial-looking waist trimmer garment; all it does is push the fat up and down. Have you ever seen the scene in the original "The Blob" where the Blob comes oozing out the doors of the movie theatre? 'Nuff said.

a beautiful ernestine.jpg

This is Ernestine Shepherd. She's 79 years old. She motivates me everyday to exercise. It's nice to have an icon to get you going. Her arms just show how exercise can beat age. :eek:nthego:
