Is global warming a serious problem?

Or have I been brainwashed?

I believe warming cannot be denied since there is melting at the poles, but for how long? Couldn't that be a natural, temporary thing?

It seems the earth normally goes through it's own cycles, but are we forcing weather issues?

I believe so, but I don't want to.

Any thoughts?

There have been ice ages and thaws before there was history. It is all a matter of cycles.

I am more concerned about pols that make rules for us, but not them.

The earth has gone through numerous warming and cooling cycles. The problem today is the fact that 100's of millions of people live in low lying coastal cities that will quite likely be flooded in another century or two. Most scientists agree that the U.S., for example, could lose as much as 17% of its coastal land mass....mostly along the Gulf and Eastern seaboards. Houston, New Orleans, nearly all of Florida, Washington, NYC, Boston, and any other areas that are less than 20 ft. above current sea levels are at risk. This could easily displace 150 million people. The Arctic is already showing major melting, and the Greenland ice sheets are receding more, every year. If it got warm enough to melt Antarctica, the oceans would rise 200 ft. Then, there are millions in Asia that rely on the glaciers in the Himalaya's for their fresh water. There is little doubt in my mind that it is occuring, and there is little we can do to stop it. Those living 100+ years from now will find themselves in a far different world than we know.

Does it really matter?

We still need to address it.

I don`t know enough about it ... all I know is the weather seems to follow the same patterns year in and year out as it has done for
100s of years.. I read a book and it was set in the winter time and just the same as ours is now... but its over 200 years old, so thats why
I don`t know enough ..

Yes, there is definitely a problem. Remember back in the 60's when the 'hippies' were warning about what we were doing to the environment? They were dismissed as cranks. The question is...have we reached the point of no return? What annoys me most of all is the British government seeming to be concerned about global warming and yet still going ahead with their building plans, chopping down trees and replacing them with concrete. As usual, it's a case of 'let the next generation deal with it'.

Doubt anyone here will be impacted, whether or not

The earth will fix itself

Whether it keeps people around…who knows

I don't know enough either.

But I trust the opinion of the overwhelming majority of people that do. Scientists.

Depends on who you ask. People on both sides of this issue can spout "scientific evidence" to prove their viewpoint. I think something is going on globally, but whether it's from climate change that humans caused or a natural cycle of the earth, I'm not sure. I also think we have really polluted our environment and need to stop harmful actions.

I think that climate change is cyclical, but humans have also contributed to it, perhaps not to the degree that some claim. The increase of temperature since the 19th century, info here.

The planet's average surface temperature has risen about 1.62 degrees Fahrenheit (0.9 degrees Celsius) since the late 19th century, a change driven largely by increased carbon dioxide and other human-made emissions into the atmosphere.[SUP]4[/SUP] Most of the warming occurred in the past 35 years, with the five warmest years on record taking place since 2010.

I don't know enough about it, but I strongly agree that we should be taking better care of the planet in the way of decreasing pollution of the oceans and air with garbage and chemicals which are also destroying the plants and trees. Reducing the use of chemical insecticides and herbicides is of great importance, in my opinion. Waste and pollution from big industrial plants should be addressed and controlled, of course wind and solar power can benefit in certain areas.

We should also leave certain areas untouched, like national forests and green spaces, that would be in the best interest of both man and animals.

More technical information about climate change for those interested here.

Somewhere around 97% of scientists strongly agree that global warming is upon us, it is an impending disaster, and human behaviors have either caused or vastly exacerbated it. Some news outlets and politicians quote the 3% and suggest that these opinions are among the majority or are science-based. They are neither.

Numerous books and scientific articles continue to be published about the dire threat of global warming. The facts and statistics are beyond alarming. Increased CO2 levels, melting glaciers and permafrost, "100 year" extreme weather events including massive wildfires, floods, droughts, super storms, and hurricanes are now occurring every few years.

This is only going to get worse. Our children and grandchildren will be stuck trying to mitigate the environmental disasters that our politicians and corporations are ignoring.

Of course not. Just because there are billions of gas fired engines spewing out megatons of vile toxins, and hundreds of thousands of coal fired factories and electric generating plants dumping megatons of toxins into the same air, and because we bathed the entire planet in our waste and trash, has absolutely no effect on the earth. Besides we've had periods of warming before. Like when Northern Africa was changed from a fertile Savannah to the Sahara Desert, so we have absolutely nothing to worry about. And I don't care if there's 60+ years of scientific research, it's all a hoax, like saying we went to the moon in '69.

You get the gold star for this thread. I totally agree...

I'll go with the side that has the 97% of the world's scientists that say it's real. You can have the side that has the other 3% that have been paid off by the fossil fuel industry to manufacture bogus studies that say it's a hoax.

I don't know any scientists and I don't trust the media.

Visit a natural history or other science museum and seek out one of the curators. They'll give you an earful about global warming. Read some well-respected science journals on line. The information is everywhere. Indeed, it's hard to miss.
