Is having to arrive 3 hours before departure efficient?

Just heard that to catch an international flight from Australia one must arrive at least 3 hours before flight departure.
Domestic flight? 2 hours before departure.
All one has to do is use the self serve electronic check in terminals to confirm plus check in baggage.
That should be a smooth process, yes?
Airlines are treating passengers as mugs
I guess it all depends on what is important.

Is sitting at home an extra hour important?

Is getting checked in and sitting that hour in an airport different than waiting that hour at home?

I feel like 3 hrs is good for international flights, the international airport is so large that most of the first hour is taken up walking to find security, waiting to get through security, riding a train to the right part of the airport, finding the specific gate. Then the next hour does feel fairly wasteful but it useful for buying snacks, browsing the bookstore, going to the bathroom, and charging the phone. Then the third hour is fully taken up by the boarding process, and if all goes smoothly the plane will be out in line by 10 minutes before the takeoff time.

With the way the world works today, we don’t need to be at the airport three hours prior to departure. An hour is enough time, unless you are flying Internationally and have a Visa stamp in your passport, I would allow a little longer than an hour, especially if you are returning.

Most airlines allow online check-in 24 hours before the flight, but some airlines will sell your seat if you fail to check-in 30-60 minutes prior to departure.
