IS it Me, or does "Google Maps" mess up at times?

I took a trip To Philly yesterday. There was lots on construction delays on the Interstate, so I used the old routes and my phone's map program. I began to get lost. I was missing turn offs. I hate it when it says, "Go east on Jefferson Drive." First, which way is east? and then which of these 4 streets, without name plaques is Jefferson? I admit I get confused at times. And I was getting bad instructions. "Turn off at exit 100A". But the nearest exit was Exit 49?? Then when I was on I-476, it wanted me to "Turn right on Mulberry". Because of the construction, we had to use detours, there were a line of cars, who had to turn around-we were on a dead end road.

I keep thinking I need to have a compass with me for when it does that.

Google maps has driven me nuts lots of times. In Buffalo there was a road very close to the hotel that went all the way to Niagara Falls, very convenient, but because it was a couple minutes longer the app was grumbling at me to turn left at the next road and it kept that up half the way until it finally gave up (presumably at that point my way was less time).

And when I drove from Boston to DC, I wanted to avoid going through NYC and I carefully selected the route to avoid it, but darn it google maps tricked me into going smack dab through NYC.

It needs more options, if I tell it not to use highways it sends me all over on narrow winding roads, I wish it had a setting for using main streets (the kind with traffic lights). Also it is annoying when it sends me through residential neighborhoods to save a minute, that is not what those streets are for! And while I kind of like it warning me when there is a speed trap ahead, there are some drivers that really need to get a ticket and I hate it that it is letting those drivers not get caught/educated before they cause a serious accident.

I have had issues a couple times. Once had me going in circles to find a place. A friend suggested WAZE He lives in Los Angeles and said it is the best app for driving there

Yep. But it’s also very helpful. Routed us off the interstate once and through a rest stop. Fortunately, Dave didn’t argue with it like he usually does. Turned out we missed a big accident/traffic jam that way. The upside is that it has real time traffic info and can send you the fastest way.

Call me old fashioned, but if I was setting out to drive from Toronto to some small place in Indiana, I would FIRST plan my route using a national road atlas, writing down the route, including direction changes, and the interstates I would be driving on. A state map of Indiana would get me to the final destination. I used that method for 5 years when I was a owner /operator with a Toronto based expedite freight company. Never got lost. I recently added a new app to my phone. It is a lens that magnifies things like the small details on a map. Wonderful, and it is free from the App Store. JimB,

I use the visual version of Google Maps, and plan my route. I don't want someone talking to me while I'm driving.

Last time I looked, they told me the information might not be correct, and I should do a "reality check" before taking their word about anything. Seems fair.

Maybe Uber or Lyft will serve you better.

I use Apple Maps. Found it better with the instructions than Google.
