Is poker a sport? Chess? Racing cars?

I ran across a show about a high stakes poker game on a sports network. They acted like poker was a sport. Alright, I'll buy curling as a sport, but poker? Where's the ball, and, a ref in a striped shirt? A nice looking blonde, in a short dress, passing out alcohol is NOT an umpire. Is it a great test of human endurance to hold 5 paper cards in your hand? Same thing about chess- no ball, no ref. How do you consider putting your foot on the gas in a race car, and just keep turning left (or right , if you're in Europe) as a sport? Do you think these a true sports? Any other "sports' that you don't hink measure up to the name "sport"?

I would consider open wheel racing a sport. Anyone who thinks you just push the gas and turn left is seriously mistaken.
Take a peek at an non winged sprint car in action and then imagine trying it with 24 others on the track at the same time.
I fail to see how a sport must involve a stick, ball, or umpire.

Well this is 2021, so don't know how the definition of 'sport' has changed today, but I always thought it was an athletic activity requiring skill or physical ability... and usually competitive in nature.

√ .. Poker is competitive

There are "physical" sports, and then, there are "mental" sports. Things like Chess and Poker would rank in the "mental" category, IMO. I like to play poker, and trying to match wits with a half dozen other people, and trying to figure out if my hand is better than theirs, is often quite a challenge.

The Brain shares a common denominator with muscles....in that "If you don't use it, you lose it".

Sports require a connection between the mind and the body for a limited time. One can play board games in to their nineties, not so in sports.
