Is the cat going up the stairs or down?

How did you come up with your answer?

The cat seems to have depth behind it that could be up or down

The solid step risers seem to jut out a little making my decision to choose going down.

Up, as the top background at the base of the stairs appears to be a floor rather than a wall.

Either way using logic. The cat appears to be going up, which when cats go down they face in the direction they are moving. But, the cat may be going down if they are using the wooden strips as a guide as to where each step ends, however, this is not likely.

At the end of using logic, I would say the cat is “more likely” to be going up.

my initial response was gonna be... YES.

then after studying the picture... the cat is going down the stairs. you can see shadows on what would be the risers.

I would say he is going down.
The wooden part is the end of the step.
It is unlikely the patterned part is the actual step.

The most ambiguous part of the image to me is the cat's posture
But, the construction of the steps and the plaster wall inserts at the end of each step screams ... going down

Down. We are looking up and can see the edges of the steps.

Down because the surface of each stair protrudes out about 1/2" beyond the risers so he has to be coming down the stairs.

Each step has a shadow like the shadow in the lower part of my red circle. The shadow means there is a ledge or board sticking out, probably an inch or so, which would be the top of each step. If the cat was going up, he would be about to place his white paw onto a board that is sticking out. A person could not do that without being in danger of falling or tripping, so, it seems to me the cat is going down the steps.

Posts #3, 13, 18, 21 and #22 basically say the same thing - they just used different words to express it.
